I was wondering why some of you are still using this 13 years old OS in 2023?

Since it's been 3 years that Microsoft ended support for this OS, what makes you stick with it?

How can it be better than 10 or 11?

It takes more time and effort to debloat and customize Win 10. But it can be done with some tweaks and third party tools.

On my offline desktop I still have Win 7 - it just works. On the laptop it's Win 10, debloated.

Why do you need to debloat it?
I mean, it might be bloated but how does this prevent you from using it for producing some music?

Because it works and belongs to you completely, not some Redmond corporation which does with your OS anything that comes into it's mind

Any unnecessary processes running in the background can affect dpc latency negatively. This is one of the best things about Win 7, the ultra low DPC latency. On my desktop it goes down to 4-5 us.

What's wrong with running it online? I know: no security patches, but anti-virus / anti-malware protection still works fine. Sure, any decent hacker could gain access to my system, but it's not like I'm having top secret intel on my desktop machine.

This is my main music production system, I don't care what Microsoft supports, because I support it, and in 10 years it will still work :winker:

Oh, no! I don't mean to say that you insulted anyone ..
It's just some people insult those who still like to use Win7, saying they are out of touch or need better hardware or are paranoid, etc...
Then some Win7 users will say that those other people use Win10 because they don't know what the **** they are doing, etc ...

Maybe this thread will avoid that kind of childish fighting...
Personally I appreciate using Win10 mainly, but up until 2020 I was running Win7 and WinXp, too.
That was partly due to hardware limitations, but also type of machine use.
All my program archives were labeled with [Xp+],[w7+] & [w10+] according to requirements and I had so many older versions of stuff. Eventually I just ran out of storage I wanted to use for other stuff.

    All good then.
My curiosity about W7 was actually genuine and I'm starting to understand why some people are still using it thanks to these feedback.

I wish that was true, major DAWs and plugins have already stopped supporting it. I'm still using studio one 4.6 cuz 5 doesn't support win7, a couple of plugins too that I used to use regularly. As bad as it might sound, we'll have to make the jump pretty soon.

Because so far there's no reason to change it - and it had to be a veeery good reason to do so.

I've enough EQs, compressors, reverbs and stuff for what I'm doing. New Hornet clipper needs Win10? So what? I've free and paid clippers running fine. Just tested XVOX, running, new PA stuff, running, what I use from Waves, running, ...

And in terms of being online, running. I never caught any malware, neither with outdated XP, nor with 7.

@mrpsanter You know what the Commodore C64 community did when after 41 years of operation the electronic components inside began to break down, they replicated every chip inside anew, so even today you can buy an original C64 with modern components inside.
I think the same thing will happen with Windows 7, the community won't just let it to be forgotten :disco:

The fact that so many people still run very modern applications on Win7 is honestly a testament to how insanely compatible Windows is as an OS and platform.

yes and with Win10/11 versions Microsoft it trying to kill this compatibility which was the strongest feature of windows going the Apple root where every new OS update kills programs made for previous ones
