    Hi there,

i got a strange problem in Logic Pro X / Logic 9 and also in Steinberg Wavelab.

I've never had an error like this before.

I've just purchased some new plugins at Pluginboutique. Installed them and tried to use them within Logic Pro X.

Unfortunately every single of those plugins had the exact same error message in Logic's Plugin Manager "couldn't be opened".

If i try to "reset & rescan" a plugin for example SketchCassette II - i am getting the following message:

validating Audio Unit SketchCassette II by Aberrant DSP:

    AU Validation Tool
    Version: 1.6.1a1

VALIDATING AUDIO UNIT: 'aufx' - 'SCii' - 'Abrn'

    * * PASS
    --------------------------------------------------
    TESTING OPEN TIMES:
    COLD:

    FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF

    validation result: couldn’t be opened

Every single plugin has the same error message "-1,0xFFFFFFFF" and "couldn’t be opened".

All my other plugins which are installed for years now - running perfectly. But if i try to rescan a working plugin, i get the same error and the plugin is unusable.

In Logic Pro 9 i'm getting the same error. In Steinberg Wavelab 9.5 the newly installed plugins don't show up either.

I tried to reinstall the plugins. No success.
i tried it with disabled SIP via the csrutil command. No success.
i tried to install the plugins in SafeMode. No success.
i tried a "Permissions Reset" on severeal .component files. No success.
    i did a PVRAM/NVRAM reset. No success.

The only thing i did't not try was to delete the plugin cache and do a complete rescan of all my plugins. Because i'm afraid that it will kill every single plugin. So i won't be able to use the older still working plugins too. But maybe will be the final try.

Im using an older Macbook Pro End 2013 - still on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 - Logic Pro X 10.4.4 - I don't want to upgrade this system because there are some older plugins which im still using - which won't run on new systems. I also have some new Mac systems in my studio - but this is my homestudio setup and its still very important for me.

I really don't know whats going on. It seems to be a global Macos problem, because the plugins also don't run in other DAWs.

I tried to search for my problem on other websites. Didn't find a solution for this.

I really hope someone on this forum can provide some help to solve my problem.

    Thank you in advance!

    Best regards Greg

1.) FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -50,0xFFFFFFCE

This looks like your plug-ins somehow got corrupted.
Could you try removing them entirely from your computer, then downloading and installing them again?

Try using OSX Validate All AU's utility to force validation of the ones which are not showing up.

    https://macdownload.informer.com/osx-validate-all-aus/

I would use BatChmod, not Permissions Reset; in almost every case. Once in a great while Permissions Reset will fix something which BatChmod does not fix. (I don't really know or care why)

    BatChmod: http://lagentesoft.com/batchmod/

@BEAT16, on MacOS you do not need to remove plugins. You just move them out of the folder, because they are not system kinds of files like .dll. You can also just move the entire folder and rename a new one so it replaces the older one. Your approach is much easier than having to re-download everything. It's more like keep them, move them out of the way, and then Add Them Back one at a time.

Also, when you purchase something; it should already be signed. You should never need to code sign a purchased piece of software. I have had to, so I know it's possible; but it's a pretty remote occurrence. Normally the AU will not crash, though. Logic Plugin Manager will just not see it.

I am wondering if it has something to do with Aberrant's GUIs actually. If they are not coded to run on High Seirra; the main difference between it and Mojave are "METAL" support. These machines need a graphics card upgrade in many cases, before they can be updated to Mojave. My Pro is like this, it can only run Logic 10.4. And I hate it for everything other than mixing. 10.5 is far superior for my purposes.

I only have one Abberant plugin and it is ShapeShifter. Not very good.

If I had the option to upgrade the laptop to Mojave and 10.5 I would do it in a minute.

    Hi there,

    many thanks for your help.

Hi keygen, i tried to codesign one of the plugins, which worked before. But it did not validate, even after codesign.

Hi BEAT16, i tried both of your posts. The second post was easy for them to fix because there was a dylib file missing in a specific folder. That's not the case in my error message.

Like in your first post, i tried to delete several plugins, downloaded the installer again and reinstalled them. But again it shows the same error as before.

And the strange thing is, that its always the same error with every plugin "FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF".

Hi Clone, thank you for your links. Unfortunately the OSX-validate Tool download link is not working anymore.

I also tried to batchmod some plugins. But i get the same error message over and over again, "FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF" no matter which plugin im using.

I tried to install the Aberrant Plugin with the legacy option. Now it shows the plugin in two versions 1.0 and 2.1.0 in Logic. The funny thing is, the older version works fine!

    upload_2022-5-17_0-9-31.png

Maybe those newly downloaded plugins are actually really incompatible with my system.

But that doesn't explain, why older plugins which worked fine, didn't validate after i tried to rescan them again. But i also tried to rescan some other even older plugins like Sonic Academy A.N.A. 1 or Tone2 ElectraX - which im not using anymore. But those two did validate fine after rescan.

I could update this Macbook Pro to Big Sur. This is the last compatible OS. But some of my current productions won't work anymore if i do that OS update.

A few weeks ago, i had massive problem with iMessage. I could not post images or screenshots within iMessage. i tried to setup my IM again but i couldn't even logout with my apple ID nor could i login to itunes, icloud etc.! Extremly strange behaviour!

I tried do a timemachine backup and it didn't work. So i did a scan on my system HD, it seemed to have an error and First Aid recommended to boot into Recovery Mode and do a repair of the system HD. Some errors where corrected. Everything worked fine again, and i could do a TM Backup again. After that i was able to setup my icloud, Imessage etc again. Everything worked fine again. But maybe my plugin problem has something to do with it? Wrong system permissions i don't know..

    Thanks for your help guys!

    Best regards Greg

if you were to update the OS, I would still only go to Mojave and 10.5. if you want any hope of older plugins working. I do use some older stuff, like the Elysia Alpha etc.; and everything new works too.

I have to run out but I will read your post more fully later on.

Hello @greg, maybe this will help you:

1.) All Eventide and Newfangled Audio plug-ins are compatible with:
    • macOS Monterey
      • AU, VST2, and VST3 natively support M1 and Intel processors
      • AAX natively supports Intel, and M1 under Rosetta 2
      • Important info for users running Intel machines or GarageBand under Rosetta: Eventide and Newfangled Audio plug-ins cannot currently be opened in GarageBand 10.4.4 on macOS Big Sur, however they will open in GarageBand 10.4.5 on macOS Big Sur. Eventide and Newfangled Audio plug-ins cannot currently be opened in GarageBand 10.4.4 and above on macOS Monterey. Please hold off updating GarageBand until this issue is resolved.
    • Windows 11
All Eventide and Newfangled Audio plug-ins are 64-bit only. See each plug-in’s product page for further OS requirements.

    2.) SplitEQ and Logic crash
    www.eventideaudio.com/forums/topic/spliteq-and-logic-crash/

3.) Could you verify that you have the latest version of iLok License Manager installed (iLok License Manager -> Check for Updates with ILM as the current app), and that the license is activated in the iLok License Manager?

I sent you a link via pm for osx validate all au's util. I'm not sure why it is gone from macinformer.

I keep the utilities needed for most users needs uploaded on my mega drive. I just don't put the links public because it is a free account.

I also sent you the Codesigner Beta last available version. Try using it to Codesign the plugins in question. Use the --deep option. Sometimes people typo commands into terminal. Using Codesigner app removes this possibility because it is point and click.

I ran into almost this exact same thing once with your TM. it was even worse. I had to reformat, and the drive I had my time capsule on was quite old. I ended up locking myself out of my account for about 2 weeks or more, and had to run scene version of logic for weeks. Catalina downgrade maybe? I forget. It sucked. Let me read your entire posts now. The pressure is off though when the apple store can't help you.

I have waves removed entirely from my machines. These I can't help you with. Other than. to say "Fabfilter". I have not used waves in about 3 versions, and they have added like 50 plugins. No thanks.

eventide - Valhalla. Black Rooster. Pro-R. I never use this now. I remember trying to install on Mojave and it was a nuisance. That was H3000 or something Lexicon old reverbs. I'd rather use Chromaverb or Space Designer in Logic anyway. This is more HD clutter. I run MacBook off 250gb internal ssd so real estate is not handed over to old plugins very lightly; especially if they are a pita.

Hi GabeGhost, as mentioned above i had a similar problem.

What solved it for me was..

    1. run Disk Utility and do a First Aid scan of your MacOS system drive. i had several errors, to repair them i had to...
    2. boot into recovery mode and starting Disk Utility again and do another First Aid scan of the System Drive. All errors and permissions have been corrected.
    3. turn off the mac. unplug all external drives. exept the one you want to use for a timemachine backup (plugged into the mac directly without any usb hub).
    4. restart the mac. start a time machine backup.

In my case the backup worked fine. After this procedure i could logout of my Apple ID/iCloud (which i wasn't able to before!!!). i changed my Apple ID password. And i tried to log into all Apple ID/iCloud services on my mac. iMessage, iCloud, iTunes etc. everything worked fine again.

I have no idea why my Apple ID/iCloud stopped working and why a timemachine backup solved the problem for me.

Maybe only a First Aid scan and the repair of your permissions on your system HD will do it for you.. i don't know.

i hope my solution will do it for you too.

Yes, i have the latest iLok Licence Manager installed. It says Version 5.5.2. edit: The licence is activated.

My other Eventide Plugins are running fine except SplitEQ.

    upload_2022-5-17_13-19-53.png

I have checked the system requirements for several plugins i have installed and which failed to validate. I'm still on Sierra 10.12.6 but the plugins should run fine.

    Aberrant DSP SketchCassette II
macOS 10.10 Yosemite - macOS 11 Big Sur (Intel / M1 Apple Silicon supported) (64-bit only)

    Eventide SplitEQ
macOS 10.9 and later (Intel / M1 Apple Silicon supported) (64-bit only)

    Oeksound Soothe2
    Mac OS X 10.12 (Sierra) – macOS 12 (Monterey)

    Cableguys Shaperbox 2
Mac OS X 10.9 or later

    Sonnox Oxford Inflator
    macOS OS X 10.8 or later - M1 compatible using Rosetta 2.

    Xfer Records Serum
    macOS 10.11 or later

SERUM was running fine too. But i wanted to update it to the latest version. Now i get this error.

I tried to install the latest version v1.35b1 - but why is it showing 0.19.70 in Logic? Is this the right version number? Seems strange to me.

Thank you for the tools. Unfortunately nothing has changed.
I tried OSX Validate first. no success. i disabled it again.
Then i tried codesigning the component files. The codesigning process worked fine but in Logic i got the same error as before. "FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF"
This is such a strange behaviour. Now i will try to install some other plugins and to see if i get them to work.

Try something recent. I have been using Softube Saturation plugin a bit lately and it is free. Try that one, since it should need almost no intervention.

Someone left this comment about this: the mobile device frameworks issue was related to a recent iTunes update. Once I ran another updater (iTunes Device Support Update) and restarted, all plugs validate properly.

This sounds totally stupid, but I think you should try it. Especially with you mentioning your account being problematic? You could have the same symptom but totally different problem. That is a easy fix, if it applies to your actual situation. It's like the "Fast Video Playback" bug. The fix is to restart core audio?wtf. May as well update iTunes.

some of these very old plugins are hit or miss, and they have been mostly surpassed anyway. Many just in the Logic stock plugins alone. :) I will usually go back and check comments from any users from the time of release. They often have tips which are individual to each specific one. If it is something more current, you can see if the version was a nuked release. upawg

Something really strange is going on on my Mac..?!

Yes, i stumbled upon this forum post too. But in the plugin manager error message you could find a hint to solve this problem. But i have to say that its an extremly weird error too. Makes no sense at all.

I my case there is no indicator what is causing the problem. And it really freaks me out.

Is there an info about the error code "-1,0xFFFFFFFF" What could it mean?

The iTunes thing was real, and what happened (from memory) was something along the lines of an iTunes/iPhone compatiability update that removed a dependency that some plugins relied upon, causing them to no longer work. But it was a fairly old issue now, and probably not related to this..

This looks like your plug-ins somehow got corrupted.
Could you try removing them entirely from your computer, then downloading and installing them again

First delete the faulty plugin Xfer Records - Serum. Some plugin is faulty. After deleting please restart your PC.

1.) FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF
    Q:
This is opening an AU on an older Mac.

Does anyone know how to systematically debug this and identify the actual cause. All I can find are guesses and it’s on a customer computer so I could really do with a way of identifying the root cause! I managed to get a dtruss output from auvaltool and even that wasn’t clear!

You are likely experiencing an Audio Unit cache issue.
Simply reboot the system and re-validate UVI Workstation in the Plugin Manager in Logic if required.

How to Clear my Audio Unit Cache

For specific reasons, you may need to reset the Audio Units cache – here is the procedure:

    1. In Finder, go to Go then Go to Folder in the menu bar at the top.
    2. Copy-paste the following path then click Go:
      ~/Library/Caches
    3. Delete any folder named AudioUnitCache.
    4. Delete any file named com.apple.audiounits.cache.
    5. Reboot the system.

I've just deleted the AudioUnitCache Folder and com.apple.audiounits.cache File(s). Did a reboot.

Then i let Logic rescan all of the plugins. Unfortunately a big chunk of my plugins (which worked before) failed to validate now.

Half of the failed scans show the typical error: "FATAL ERROR: OpenAComponent: result: -1,0xFFFFFFFF"

the other half now shows that MobileDevice Error:

validating Audio Unit UltraReverb by Eventide:

For example if i scan my 9 Cableguys Plugins. 6 of them get the MobileDevice Error the other 3 get that -1,0xFFFFFFFF Fatal Error.
All of my five D16 Plugins got the MobileDevice Error.
1 of my 6 Eventide Plugins got the MobileDevice Error - the other 5 got -1,0xFFFFFFFF
and the list goes on and on..

I didn't find any option to install a new MobileDevice Update. How can i fix that?

Next thing i could do is to reinstall my MacOS (Sierra) or update to maybe MacOS Mojave. Maybe this will fix it?! Does anyone know if i lose my plugin installations and my installed programs, when i'm installing the OS over my current one? Or do i have to reinstall every plugin/program from scratch or maybe i only have to register everything again!?
