Are you talking about TDR Proximity? I'm not sure, but I think it only mimics the distance of the source from the mic/recipient by introducing interaural timing differences, early reflections, high frequency roll off and a lot of other stuff I don't understand. So it is only concerned with the front, but yeah, it does that.

Logic 10.3.1 has a 3D Binaural Pan Pot now that does all this filtering and distance stuff for you. So you can just place instruments in a binaural setup. The parameters of distance, direction and levitation are all in the Panpot already. It's like a sphere where you place can instruments in.

@5teezo, yep, TDR Proximity. Same situation with it as VSS. Can't select different sizes of rooms. It'd be nice if a convolution reverb would include these types of adjustments as well.

VirtualSoundStage comes with 9 different spaces: 2 Concert Halls, 2 Scoring Stages, 1 Studio, 1 Chamber, 1 Opera, 1 Church and 1 Cathedral.
These are only intended to be used for ealry reflections. Next to the VSS you should place your reverb of choice (with early reflections disabled).
VSS prefers to be fed stereo tracks to work at it's best.

APART FROM wavearts panorama which I quoted earlier (does HRTF)

You need "Height" IRs. Most ppl that buy verbs aren't concerned with height. They want reverb, and reverb is what you get, but you can download height IRs here http://sound.media.mit.edu/resources/KEMAR/ (use the compact set & READ THE DOCS). In fact heavily processed versions of those IRs form the basis of panorama.

No, that simulates distance with volume & light EQ.

No, that simulates 2D (width, depth) position with volume & reverb & pan. We want 3D positioning (height)

No, that does 2D positioning (width, depth).

you change the height with 2 things, first is frequency response ( how much upper frequencies, and specifc shape of frequency response)

second, is reverberation, a sound located in middle or back of room or hall etc. has reverberation of sound reflections and refractions.

I would love to go more in depth with hrtf and binaural panning in normal stereo mixes. You may remember, I made a post here about a track by Pogo called Upular a while back, in which the track rotated around the listener 360 degrees. I have since found various software that provides the allusion of hrtf, but nothing truly sounds like a real binaural recording, dummy head and all.

I am not in any way related to VSS so I don't really mind what you do or don't use but, for all those interested, VSS has a control for detemining the height of the sound in relation to the listening position plus also the direction. In fact in VSS you can place the listening position anywhere you like whitin the chosen space and do the same with the sound sources.
So please read the manual before making wrong statements.

    PS: width-height is 2D, wIdth-height-depth is 3D.
VSS has controls for all 3 parameters (and more).

  15. It's at least twice as fun as mono and infinitely more so than total silence.

Maybe I need to take a harder look at this. It's been awhile since I've checked it out, honestly.

you can just use eq, to shape the frequency response of HRTF, those shapes show the change from flat to the new shape
    http://interface.cipic.ucdavis.edu/sound/tutorial/hrtf.html
    [IMG]
what ever position you want a sound to have , eq it to the appropriate shape
the frequency response graphs shown represent the change from a flat line,
take for instance i want a electric guitar to feel like its located below my nose, i just have to cut at 500 hz at .8Q by -5db a boost, also a +3 db at 1.2Q at 4.4khz and +1 db at 9khz with 2.0Q, and a filter rolling off everything above 9khz at 12 db per octave. ( note see picture nose height and its graph)
lets say i wanted a cymbal to feel like it was located above the head ( see that graph) you have -12db per octave roll off everything below 300hz , +3 db 2.5Q at 3khz and +4 db 2.5Q at 11khz with rolled off above 9khz 12 db per octave)
I find this particular method much more valuable than say a plugin that does it automatically , because your helping your brain learn about frequency response shape on perception this is highly important.

another element that is really important is the dynamic range of your sound when dealing with perception of height and width and location, a sound that is really pokey parts of the sound popping out and getting soft then hard or quiet and the loud just certain spikes of it, this perceives as close to you even if the eq shape is a certain way with reverb. but that same sound yet soft and even and fluffy sounding perceived as located farther away at distance

Yo MJ20, good looks on this chart bro! You just hooked me up big time. I have just begun to grasp the whole concept dynamics but I was missing this info to couple together with EQ.
