I recently used Valhalla reverb with Analog Delay of S1. There was a distortion issue on the vocal and I spent 3 days to figure it out. It ends up turned out the combination of the reverb and the delay was the problem.
Since I changed the delay plugin to Valhalla Delay, the issue had completely gone like a charm. It was my first time to use the different reverb plugin besides stock plugins.
I'm gonna use the reverb and the delay plugins from the same developer. So, my question is, what is the best combination for it?

Why should your reverb and delay come from the same company? :dunno:

d16 Repeater is probably my most used delay, followed by Valhalla Massive and IK Tape Echo.
Too many reverbs to list. The recently released TENS by Klanghelm is pretty cool though.

I think it is impossible to say what combinations of reverb+delays exist. They are infinite. There are also delays that can be converted into reverb. And many reverbs are actually many delays.

    My goto

    Reverb

    Valhalla
    Ni Raum
    Soundtoys
    112db reverb 2
    Polyverse Music Comet
    ReLab.Sonsig.Rev-A <---- nice to try

    Delay
    Valhalla
    MCDSP - EC-300 Echo
    Ni Replika
    Soundtoys
Audio Damage - AD054 Other Desert Cities

I'm the first to have 40 delays and 50 reverbs, and in the end it's a waste of time. Try to have 4 or 5 favorites and get the most out of each plugin. There will be some plugin that is different from the others, but it is better to find that sound you are looking for than to waste time testing vsts.

Distortion from a delay is weird, maybe S1 delay has a lower headroom for some reason or some other parameter that adds distortion.

Either way, i don't think it's reason enough to go the "same developer" route, but to each their own.

I've only tried the valhalla and fabfilter combos, fabfilter wins in functionality if you want to do crazy modulation stuff, which since it's vocals you might want to do that. Valhalla is more straightforward, if you prefer that.

I think he probably did, because of the combos you have listed.

Most of the time, my projects have 2 reverbs on a separate bus for each, available for all channels to send to. If I want to add a different reverb to some individual sounds, I will either add them in Serial or another Send to bus. And generally, I do the same thing with Delay. I add it specifically to an individual channel in serial, or again set it up to send multiple channels to.

So even though some channels may be fx'd by both a reverb and a delay, they are almost never sent directly to a deliberate combination of both effects in serial on that one channel. They are done in context and in relation to the sounds on each channel.

Honestly... all of those are perfectly capable of getting the job done, it's more a matter of personal taste really.

Whatever the reason is, it was a frustrating experience. I spend for 3 days to adjust the clip gain, fader, and other plugins, but no luck. As I mentioned in the post, the issue had completely gone since I changed the delay. Someone also mentioned it in the following thread and he was right, at least in my case.

IMHO, Valhalla Vintage Verb sounds much better than S1 stock room reverb. But Valhalla delay doesn't give me an impressive pong effect like Analog Delay of S1. I spent an hour to make it, but no luck.

sounds like one of the plugins you were using expected a different input gain level than you expected. I bet you could get better results with any combination if you were to add some utility plugins between them and track your gain staging better. especially as I don't think any company that is great at reverb is great at delay (although replika x's "reverb" is exactly what I want sometimes), I'd recommend trying again

Valhalla Vintage Verb is probably the goto reverb for the most users here of all reverb plugins.

I would try adding that reverb and leaving it there. Then test other delays to see which you like. Fabfilter Timeless 3 is really good. But there are a ton of them.

is the "Analog Delay of S1" normally a clean delay? i don't use that DAW but i know some "analog" vst's add noise/distortion in for that "analog" vibe (which i find annoying personally)... that's what i would guess. i've never heard of any thing like "you need to use the same developer for reverb and delay" that's crazy. if you're referring to lois lanes post you linked he was joking 100%. yeah its frustrating hunting down an issue but it's even more of a waste of time if you don't figure out the right answer to why it was happening. i use different reverb and delay companies all the time its a non issue.

edit took two seconds of searching, its the analog delay thats causing the distortion not the two different companies. "Create deteriorating echoes with changing delay time and pitch with this classic emulation of an analog BBD delay. Bucket brigade delays have been a favorite among guitarists and electronic producers alike for their ability to create a warm delay sound that can range from subtle modulation to spirals down a psychedelic rabbit hole. Analog Delay also features State-Space modeled Drive control to add analog grit to your sound for even more tonal sculpting.

Valhalla VintageVerb is the Fabfilter Pro-Q of the reverbs: you can use another plugin, but you don't need. Because it covers almost all the tasks.

    Some favorites:

    Reverb:
Relab Sonsig Rev-A - still sounds amazing on everything for me
Relab LX480 Essentials - throw it on and forget it, great sound
Valhalla VintageVerb - all-in-one tool, but not that impressive today
Chromaverb and Silververb (Logic stock) - amazing for stock plugins, Chromaverb actually reminds me of VintageVerb, but with better UI/UX
Raum (has that interesting sound on "Airy" setting, although I use it rarely)
Wavesfactory Echo Cat - absolutely amazing, with "Sustain" turned off can also be a very nice effect)

    Delay:
Logic Tape Delay (honestly I use it all the time, it's so easy and sounds incredible for a stock plugin)
    Valhalla Delay
AudioThing Reels Delay (bought this one today, mostly for a lofi, old tape effect, but the delay sounds great too)

I did read your post and I apologise for my condescending tone. The idea of locking yourself into the same developer because of a one-off bug the very first time you try something different seemed so excessive to me that I didn't think it needed explaining - like shaving your entire body because you've spotted a single grey hair.

I've tested a large number of delays and reverbs in various combinations and I've not come across a case where one or the other started sounding better or worse because it came from a different or the same developer.

    Please keep experimenting.

At some point you will want specific types of reverbs and delays - ambience, realistic spaces, springs, plates, shimmers, digital, outer space. Tape delays, BBD delays, digital delays etc. The grit and distortion in some of these is intentional.

Few vendors cover the entire range - Valhalla may come closest out of the ones you've listed.

Just remember that The "best" is always subjective. I voted for Valhalla combination because I like how flexible it is, very well programmed, designed-functional, easy to use, and stable. But when it comes to sound I wouldn't mind Fabfilter combination, or even some of Reaper's JS FX at all.

The thing is, one should pick just a few plugins that *you* find best for your needs, know them well, and stick to them. Don't use a dozen of different delays and reverb plugins. The worst that can happen when you use some plugin you don't know well is to crash your DAW in the middle of the session, but problems with the sound are also really annoying as they're harder to trace than when crashes happen.

It's because of the order the processors are put into the chain or signal flow. This article is probably written well enough to cover what I was trying to say in earlier answer.

Reverb and delay in series, which comes first?
    from: https://www.adsrsounds.com/mixing-tutorials/reverb-and-delay-in-series-which-comes-first/

When you’re talking about sound production and processing you often hear about reverb and delay in series. But which comes first when you are using these two effects in line?

That really depends on the sound you’re trying to create. To put it simply, when it comes to reverb and delay in series it is a matter of personal preference and how your sound is intended to stand out in the mix.

The first thing to consider is the purpose of your desired effect. When you want the reverb to give the sense of a larger space and create a pleasing atmosphere, you will want to place it after the delay in your signal chain. Now, when you want your delay to create a larger soundscape, you will want to place the reverb before the delay to ensure that your signal maintains its sonic presence in the mix.

The next factor to consider is the specific type of reverb and delay you are using. Generally, most reverbs distort if you place them after the delay in your signal chain. This means that if you are using a more modern type of reverb with added distortion, you will want to place it before the delay. This will enhance the effect that your signal has on neighboring frequencies.

Finally, when using reverb and delay in series, it is important to understand the decay time of each of these effects. Reverb typically represents a longer decay time than delay does. Therefore, if you are using reverb and delay together, you may want to place the delay first in order to ensure that its effect is present when the reverb is still decaying.

In conclusion, when it comes to pairing reverb and delay in series, there is no right or wrong answer. It is a matter of personal preference and the desired effect. When considering what order to use, you should consider your type of reverb and delay, the purpose of the desired effect, and the decay time of each of the effects. Also, it is important to bear in mind that mixing and mastering techniques vary from one production to the next, so it is always a good idea to experiment to find the best results for your unique sound.
