Catalina or Big Sur

I have a Mac mini running Catalina and a MacBook Pro, question is this...Everything about them will be the same once I have restored my MacBook Pro using the backup of the Mac mini

The question is this...Do I have the MacBook running Catalina as well or do I take a chance and upgrade it to Big Sur?

    Thoughts?

Mac mini Specs: Late 2012, 16GB, i7 Quad Core, 3TB SSD
MacBook Pro Specs: 2015, 16GB, i7 Quad Core, 2TB SSD

Apple has a great history of messing up major OS releases. I would say it has become worse in recent years.

I'm on Catalina and it's pretty trash compared to stability. It came with my 2020 MBP so I'm working with it. That being said hold on to Catalina especially with those older computers you have. Possibly consider a downgrade to an older os.

Also this conspiracy about apple spying on you:

My formula for happy update macOS (mostly valid for audio production):

Apple release public X version and I know hat X-1 is ready to install.
For example now Catalina is stable and ready for update from Mojave.
The developers had enough time to sync with all the changes.
All betas or fresh releases I install on separate partition so I have two versions for A/B tests

But this pattern might change now with BIg Sur (hope so).

    Cheers

This is how I decide. Nobody but you can make those decisions because only you know how you use your computer, what is on it and what devices are attached to it. There are some pretty decent code and speed optimization offered by MacOS 11 but they are not life chancing. Personally I plan on waiting till probably after the new year at least. All my computers are running the latest version of Catalina but I am still waiting for some drivers.

On a computer you need for work that isn't exposed as a server I always wait till at least two patch cycles and updated driver availability the same applies for an older computer running up to date software and no legacy extensions.

On computer that is running legacy extensions or applications that are necessary to its function I wait to hear about updates or workaround and decide if perhaps this particular computer has reached EOL of if I need to replace a particular application in order to update. It is cost and convenience dependent. New OS bring some features and possibles but if a machine is working fine now and will cause headaches and lost time because of an upgraded OS that will not affect it's performance I will wit or leave it as is.

On a machine that is still protected by Apple Care and is just a general computing device and all legit, internet, word processing, nothing that will mess with my outside of a bit of inconvenience I take updates after about a week if I don't hear about huge vulnerabilities. I don't care about it getting bricked because it is still covered. If it gets bricked (which happened to a phone of mine before) I've never had a problem with Apple Care. You take it to the Apple Store and they just give you an other one. I always have backups, use NAS and iCloud so I never actually loose anything unless I was working on it at the time of Kaboom.

Running big Sur on a MacBook Air (2014), i5, 8GB, 128GB SSD with no issues. All previously installed apps are working 100%.
Running SSL Native V6 using iLok software. Also running Kontakt with Native Acess.

Gave up on Steinberg's messy & needlessly complicated registration system for now. All software ran but, could not launch into Cubase Elements due to eLicenser not having an activation code. Steinberg account would not generat an activation code.

Pro Tools First account would not load a license into iLok account.

See this for an on going list of software I have installed & tested:

A LOT of devs asked to NOT update.
    That's enough to understand ...

There are three reasons why I don't agree with this. For one, by owning I can buy it at a discount, which is often pretty substantial. Second, by owning, I can buy it in a good year, when I have use for the tax deductions. And third, then I own it in bad years for free and nobody will take it away from me if I can make the rent.

Do you even use a Mac? I just ask because you seem to be in every Mac thread telling the same stories.

If you have a Mac, install Little Snitch and you'll be warned before even a Bit leaves your computer into the internet - and it will only move if you allow it. There is no way around this, because that's how macOS works. And before you disagree, it's very easy to prove or disprove that, you just need an external firewall with e.g. Wireshark to see if your Mac is talking or not. Spoiler: it's not.

The problem with Big Sur is, that Apple changed macOS now to allow traffic bypassing Little Snitch. That's why I personally wouldn't upgrade until this is sorted out by either Apple or Little Snitch or both. You could still block traffic in your router, but that's just inconvenient.

second you so cute talkin bout little snitch which may be the best firewall out there but do you really think an OS builder who wants his modern amount of telemetry will be tricked by a plain firewall installed by a user...:wtf::deep_facepalm::hahaha:

    and again

So you have no idea what you are talking about but Windows is the industry standard and by definition every other OS must be a privacy and security mess as well. :like:

@Gyro Gearloose It's one thing to say "mac users spam windows posts all the time" but it's another to talk about an OS you don't know anything about! I post in Windows toics because I don't only macOS but I've been using Windows as well since 1998. So, why do you think you have anything valid to say on the matter besides just saying something because you feel the urge to?

Geh mal raus! Aber vergiss Deine Maske aber nicht!

was willsten du jetzt ...und vergiss deine maske nicht ..was soll das bist du hängengeblieben oder was...ich bin mehr draussen als du am end und zwar mit voller sauerstoff sättigung:deep_facepalm:
schon tolle argumente was du hier raus haust
    --
