I still don't understand people's infatuation with system optimizer software. They remind me of those gasoline additives that came out in the 80's and promised more horsepower and better mileage. Neither the system optimizer nor the gasoline additives do what they promise. 99% of the threads I have read here in which the OP has problems with his or her system involves some type of system optimizer being used.

Fair enough. My advice generally on W7 would be don't update anything if you are not going online, unless there is a specific update that you suspect you need. Maybe SP1, maybe.

Do you have any suggestion of which W7 updates you believe will *improve performance*? I've never known any. ;)

    @wasgedn

I have several suggestions with an explanation.

    KB2510636
This KB update fixes startup boot times making Windows boot faster. Basically, this hotfix can short the startup time anywhere from 5 to 8 seconds. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2510636

    KB2617858
This KB update fixes unexpected slow Windows startup or logon process. For example, your PC takes longer than 3 minutes to start. This problem may occur because Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) performs unnecessary validation process. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2617858

    KB2555428
This KB update fixes System boot time which may may take several minutes when you create many restore points.

    KB2028650

This KB update provides a set of performance and functionality improvements to graphics, XPS, and Media Foundation components. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...r-windows-7-and-for-windows-server-2008-r2-wh

    KB281464
This KB update increases the maximun USB transfer size in Windows 7.https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-the-maximum-usb-transfer-size-in-windows-7-a

As you can see, there are updates that will certainly improve performance. When I have the time, I will list some more. It is time consuming. Best way is to go through list of updates and select the ones that will improve performance. That is exactly what I do before I install an update.

A curated list of such updates (and some indication if they really work) would be a real boon.

You've made a good start. Cheers!

As I said, that is a time consuming task and Microfuck does not make it any easier.

    quick story:

been running windows 7 for years. love it. tried upgrding to windows 10 . always a fail. driver issues .etc. maybe its my system/ hardware. who cares. im human and always get that itch to upgrade again to windows 10 , software compatibility etc. i hate the way windows 10 looks btw (i know theres software to make it look like xp or 7 but not the same ) . anyway, this past week, tried upgrading again cause i use adobe audition for vocal recording, turns out the newest version of audition is for windows 10 only. .....tried upgrading again, fail. always fail. always have backups of your current working system btw.. anyway , i installed windows 10 with some success on a different drive, had to install windows vista drivers. wtf right? ..... anyway, took a leap and installed it on the main drive......nice clean windows installation, starting fresh/ out with the old. its nice to start fresh and install software / plugins you really use and not bullshit/ trash.

im basically almost done setting everything up again, all plugins, daw, etc, then i notice certain plugins acting weird (gui overscaling or if u drag a plugin and move it around the image distorts...BS) ......all of a sudden i get a "windows hard disk error" ....not sure wtf happened , but my hard drive started to fail. not sure why.....not blaming windows 10, but myself only. curiosity killed the cat in this case.

    luckily i have like 5 x 5tb externals where i back everything up .

waiting for a new hard drive next week to install windows 7 ultimate again and pray i never get curious to upgrade again.
such a shame windows 7 will no longer be alive or supported officially , i only hope software manufactures continue the support or underground developers continue to make work-arounds to make new software compatible with windows 7.

    .long live windows 7.

    - good vibes,

Why Windows 7 Ultimate? Go for Pro. The Ultimate is loaded with crap you don't need for your DAW. Even better why not go for the Windows 7 Lite?
