    Reflections this Christmas

It has been disappointing to experience this forum for the past two years. More and more people write the most insulted comments, call others by dirty names, etc. and this Christmas has certainly not been an exception.

Basically, I do not understand why people are using an audio forum for political, social, etc. purposes. Especially when there are so many other places on the net that are obvious to use for such messages and statements.

It's as if some think they are obliged to comment on everything and not the least issues they disagree with. As if the right to self-expression has turned into a kind of member duty?!?

Many people do not bother to read the rules of this place and are obviously surprised when a moderator removes or stops a thread and often begins to complain immediately.

As many of you already know: I've been there myself. I have been warned etc but never felt that the moderators have been unfair in their decisions - I broke the rules, therefore I was punished!

When I see how much time staff members spend on these repeated wars on irrelevant words and positions, I may be worried about the future of this forum - I do not think the staff members will keep up with this work under these conditions - just one thought.

    Happy New Year to everyone.

It's an ebb and flow, brother. It must have been around 2013, when cracked Pro Tools 10 appeared that this place was on fire. Insults and moronic attitude was all over the place. People were on DAW wars, loudness wars, ego wars, you name it. The good thing, though, is that we also have this great many people like yourself who are very supportive and really care about our community growing strong. There's always dark and gloom, but there's also bright and supportive and beautiful. This has led Audiosex to become one of the most informative places for audio professionals there is without the "you-noobies-get-the-crap-out-of-my-elite-site" attitude that stinks at some slut-like sites.

Happy holidays to you all. Let peace find its way in.

Just trying to reconcile the rules, "Comments
We're strongly against censorship, your posts may be edited by moderators to fix formatting, rename thread, or remove violating paragraphs, but even criticism of anything forum related will not be censored, as long as it's in full compliance with rules."
    with reality.
*someone, not myself, broke no rules & was punished.
I asked why that happened, and was punished.
Not sure how much simpler I can make it :\

I'm not saying that's not true. It very well could be. But I'm going to say this: I've known two of the mods here since well before they were mods, and I've known the other two for quite some time. Ned and Andrew are the opposite of people who seek out a position of authority so that they can go around swinging their big mod schlong at people. They mostly just kept their head down and made music before they were modded and now they scarcely talk at all on here. In fact ned's most notable moment of being outspoken was when he had a fight with site admin Saint, and he was modded, like.. immediately after it was resolved - which seems to run counter to the idea of AS being a place of censorship. Introninja is kind of an absentee mod half the time and is generally pretty laissez faire (sp?). Even when he shuts down conversations/closes threads/etc. he does it with a sort of "all right children, recess is over" kind of vibe. Artic is usually pretty zen and quiet. The guy's a yoga nut who makes drone music FFS lol.

In fact, two of the mods were put in place because this site had an issue with a very charismatic mod who had disagreements with the admin and tried to overreach. Accordingly, Saint modded more passive, less talkative people.

What I'm saying is... there's probably another side of the story

Look, I'm sure they are wonderful people, I've never suggested otherwise. That's not what this is about. I'm interested in something very narrow: why was a post expressing an unpopular opinion (one that I personally find hilariously wrong) censored, in [an apparent] contradiction to stated rules.
That's why I posted my question, trying to learn what it is. The reply was [paraphrasing here, not an exact quote] "we know what's best. Merry Christmas!"
    My post got locked :\

The whole thing could be resolved very simply, by replacing this drek:
    "Comments
We're strongly against censorship, your posts may be edited by moderators to fix formatting, rename thread, or remove violating paragraphs, but even criticism of anything forum related will not be censored, as long as it's in full compliance with rules."

    with
"This is an echo chamber. Our echo chamber.
If we don't like shit you post, we'll delete it. This ain't no socialist daycare, fuck you."

How could anyone have problems with that?

It's hard to me thinking about Joan Baez sharing her political ideas in a forum over the web in 60s/70s but I remember she was used to share her opinions singing her songs lyrics.

@Lambsy. I'm not ignoring you, but I figure when you are in rant mode, it's best to just let you let it all out!

Hi Lambchop......... I was not refering to you or any other in perticular ..... just in general.

Imagine this. You login as a mod and find several threads where ppl are making huge bonfires all over.

    - he has to stop this
    - he has to be polite
    - he has to be fair - everybody has to feel accepted and respected
    - etc, etc

Im so happy im not a mod in here ... so very happy ;-)

when criticism is constructive, I think it serves a very good purpose to name man and horse but when the only purpose is to get some weight of one's chest which has nothing to do with any remark or question, then I think moderators should interfere immediately. It takes 5 seconds to break someone down, there's no challenge in that. Building someone up takes more than some of the boys and girls here are good for, in my humble opinion. Then again, vigor remarks are a trend when you read some of the forums and trends pass by.

    @Lambchop

I would guess that the great majority of long time users (and maybe all the mods) are tired of divisive banter and musings about R2R, etc. etc. You know, the kind of posts that could go on-and-on forever and add nothing productive, or because the topic is out-of-scope for an audio production board.

Okay, if you want to read the letter of the law and be a rules lawyer... sure, maybe you can catch a mod in violation. But if you look at the spirit of the law and why those rules are in place, then maybe you'll see it was just an effort to keep the peace and maintain a civil tone for the forum.

Why rally so hard for freedom of speech on an audio production board, as if life-and-limb depended upon being able to post obnoxious things anonymously?

I wish mods would be more aggressive, personally. Aside from habit, I don't even know why I come here anymore as there's scarcely any developed threads about production / sound engineering / music anymore. It's mostly whinging about R2R, debates about Trump, or some other political-esque rant. For every post about nearfield monitors, there are 60 more about how AUDiTOR is a hack or V.E. is hated on all the Russian boards, yada yada blah blah.

In short, is this about making the board better, or just about finding some place where go-nowhere ranting is preferred because we all feel so powerless to change anything in the real world and need to vent our frustrations without repercussion?

Edit: Don't forget that "Since the summer of 2016 moderators have rights to remove controversial political topics. you can read further about it here." is also in the rules, and there's an entire sticky by Ned about how controversy surrounding extraneous topics tends to ruin the forum and the effort to get back to a musical core.

The mods here are incredibly lenient. I would have gone ban hammer crazy, closed the off topic section and changed my avatar to a red hammer and sickle. :guru:
