I can tell you without any emotion: absolutely unrelated. Never heard of Garth Merenghi/Dr Dagless/Darkplace before - looks like it never aired here in Germany (at least there's not even a German wikipedia page for it linked on the English one) so that's no surprise.

And just to add this as fyi: I've been using the name "DrScythe" for many years, even before I began releasing music ;)

 

Oh sry dude, I just thought u were showing us something u found / liked, didn't realise it was ur work *blushes*. It's just Dr Scythe / glasses immediately conjured up Darkplace! Ur actually quite pretty, so don't wanna compare u 2 Dagless; who just thinks he is! I would recommend Darkplace, tho, quite amusing.

Don't worry - I really just wanted to clarify that there is no connection. Not a homage, not a parody - nothing. If it reminds you of Darkplace so be it. I know that the videos seem to be cheesy but the other option (using no green screen and showing my living room) looked really bad (first 9 videos).

And I'll check out Darkplace, didn't have the time yesterday and just skipped through the vid, didn't recognize anything, checked wiki for mabye differing German title - there is none, posted my findings ;)

It's ok, I was way 2 harsh on u and feel rly guilt! I take ur point, must b difficult 2 find good stock footage or time 2 shoot vid; I guess it's just a bit difficult for me 2 connect library (dusty silence) to ur music? I sorta expect cuts 2 ferocious skater tricks / fails and drumming close-ups, for some reason? Or maybe some story-telling? I guess the videos seem a lil bit static & focused, maybe that's why I wanted the contrast of (random) stuff happening rly quickly...

 

Exactly that's the problem..for some vids it's easier to find stock (my 11th song is about space) but here it was impossible to find something matching lyrics/feel of the song. And: I live in a rural area of Germany...it's ugly here, reeeaaally ugly so filming stock on my own would be even worse (except for industrial ruins or forest but there was no need for this so far).

If I had the time and/or resources (money money money...) to make the videos I wanted to, this one would definitely be different. Either just the singing part exploring a library and the rest performing or entirely "story telling" someone getting lost in a library while urban exploring and experiencing flashbacks/visions/... when touching some books...not the most creative idea but closer to what I wanted. But I am releasing songs monthly (that's the basic idea behind the channel), have absolutely no money (srsly if my computer or the cam break down that's it for a while) and just try and improve every month (I began last November and the improvements are audible and visible). If I ever have more resources I can come back to it and redo everything - which I said to do from the very beginning (the original "official" announcement happened in Germany's largest forum for musicians to win an endorsement - which I almost won...) but I also introduced the entire project here.

 

I dunno, even the most desolate places can look beautiful - u know all those Pripyat (sp) videos? Or just record changing weather / clouds / bird flocks / cheesy time-lapse day/night cycles / aquarium / planetarium / whatevs? Guess u could try getting ur skateboard / wheelchair / rollerblades / bike (anything 2 get smooth ride) grab ur fone and do lots of zooming around - I mean treat every journey as potential 2 get source material & keep honing in "spare time"? Err. On 2nd thoughts if u got a gullible sk8r friend, ask if they'd like 2 use ur fone? Saves on injuries!

Anyway, if u kinda treat life like it's all there 2 serve as lil action / story inserts 4 ur videos, u can get a lot more contrast? It doesn't rly even have 2 make much sense, but good 2 think of a story idea b4 & watch how ur plans fail & make something more interesting...

Oh yeah, totally missed the proect announce! I checked it out & rly liked 2nd vid (calling teh X?) it was funny, liked the pull expressions / nice beat cuts & had surprise wolf head! i only got 2 about 5th vid, Youtube errors =( Anyway, there's too many jump cuts, y'know? U should keep reuse those close-ups in all ur vids, just try 2 use ones with similar movement direction 2 keep cuts consistent. Also, if ur going 2 cut 2 stock, try 2 cut on either beats or on "action". I kinda liked the grungey lo-fi vibe of 2nd vid. I think it just needed like a bit of cloud / space whatev drama for the solo, get rid of jump cuts & would've been great!
