Why are my songs all sounding samey?

So... a productive Sunday indeed. One hack and a track.

    But...

My output has increased recently but the tracks seem to be bleeding into each other.

It's strange as I never set off with a specific idea in mind in terms of a genre.

[Later edit] It's just dawned on me that Tears For Fears must have ripped off their "Songs from the Big Chair" album cover from that Sly/Fonzie pic.

if you can't convince yourself, you will never convince me!

do you have any other alternative career paths in reserve that don't involve pouring coffee or flipping burgers?

(later edit) sorry if that sounds harsh ... it's not really ..... it's just a wake-up call to the reality outwith peoples wee self contained bubbles of personal awesomeness .....

I have the same problem, and some people say I have invented a new genre called sleep music, because they doze off halfway through!

It's all just one song with the illusion of seperatness.

Jodie Foster. A talented actress no doubt, but to have the audacity to comment on my tracks 4 years before I had written them is rather arrogant don't you think?

It's called a stale period or a plateau. It does not mean you have lost anything. More often than not, it is a period of transition, development and change. The mere fact you are asking yourself if it sounds the same means you are searching. This is one of the best gifts a writer has, to question their own work. Additionally, you will always be your own worst critic.

Last, the reference to 'Foster' made earlier is about an ex-forum person who would take one word and run left, then further, then further until their trolling ended up trolling itself. He wasn't making fun of you. :) It's difficult to explain, but Foster left a permanent cynicism scar on anyone who tried to make sense with Foster and the Pink Panther was his avatar.

How long would it take you to recognize a new track from a band you're well familiar with? In my case like Rammstein or Metallica, 0.3seconds? So that's completely normal and just means (for the time being) you've found you're style.

You should make a 12 hour version and load it up to YT. It's a thing there. [IMG]

I like those drums, where are they from?

Also there is nothing wrong with sounding "samey", that's actually your signature so don't be bothered.

Give those drums some movement, envelope shaping, creative fx.
Add some percussion, listen to pro songs to see how much layering is done.
The song loses its energy in the middle.
    BPM should be faster.
The bass line should be saturated, you should make it angry, growly since the vocals are nice and polished you have to counter attack with something to make it more interesting, more underground sounding yet still clean enough for mainstream.
Its not bad at its core, you could do something cool with this.

You should check out EZ Mix2, lots of cool presets for instruments, limiting, mastering, etc. for beginners of mixing.

It was getting late and I knew it would be next weekend before I could polish it up, so just thought I'd post it to see if it was worth bothering spending more time on it.

As it stands, all I've done is volume levelling. There is currently no panning, no sidechaining, very little transition FX and as you say, very little variance in the drums. The breakdowns are a bit flat too, I was just trying to get something to contrast with the main riff.

Will re-visit it as you suggest.
