So... was reading a post about the new Playbeat3 earlier, and Microtonic was mentioned.

I couldn't believe the price of Microtonic was still so high on Plugin Boutique (given it's about 15 years old), so had a look on sister site.

Sure enough... a version was there but warned of timebombs happening in some DAWs.

So I downloaded and tried.... and everything was working fine except each time you load the plugin, it shows an annoying pop up saying "a new version is available" - this is despite the settings having "check for updates" turned off.

I can't block my DAW with the firewall because I need certain legit plugins that have a server check to be able to connect.

So i loaded Fiddler... and found that that the plugin was calling a URL to the developer site with a /versioncheck subdomain.

Now I couldn't block the full site in the HOSTS file because that would then not allow me access to the "planetarium" section. What to do.....?

So I opened up the dll using an online hex editor, searched for the URL string of the version checker from fiddler... changed 2 characters of the URL (so that it was now looking for cuniccharge.com) and saved the dll.

Fully expecting the new dll to completely crash when trying to load it....

But to my surprise... loaded up perfectly witn no annoying popup.
Running Fiddler shows the DLL trying to contact the new incorrect URL and giving up after a few 502 errors.

I guess if I wanted to kill that URL call completely, I could add the invalid cunicharge.com to my hosts file.

An interesting exercise.

Just need to think up my new scene name.

 

You can't take a scene name yet.
First you must change 2 more letters in that url to "cuntcharge.com" and try it again...
Then you will have some street cred.

I've got 20 mins spare later so might have a go at UVI Falcon.
