What and how would you make if you didn't have your DAWs or Sequencers?

  1. As simple as this. I'll be so pleasured to know the answer especially to the "What" section of the title's question.

I recently bought an ADAT to transfer old tapes/recordings over to my computer, so I can remix and master them. In the late 90's we used analog and/or digital tapes and played shit live.
So to answer your question, I would record live to tape (digital or analog). You can record a metronome on one track and use that to play against. You can also have one track that is time-code (MTC), which you then can sync to a computer (as slave). They did that even back in the Atari + Cubase sequencer (+synth + drum machines) days.

  4. Please let me clarify the point of the question:

Music produced by any kind of electronic instrument is banal. Electronically produced music doesn't touch the human's soul.

I have a number of ADATs which I truly love and still use now and then, in tandem even with Pro Tools. And I also keep a well-maintained TEAC 3440 four-track reel-to-reel machine (with its own dedicated DBX module) close to hand. Not just in case, rather just for fun. Tapes I keep a stock of as well as cassettes for the ADATs. Great stuff.

You're all over the shop mate, you use to post your attempts at music made with synths, praise those electronic sounds and knock guitars and acoustic sounds, now you are saying electronic sounds are banal, you also say orchestral sounds are boring etc but you have since made attempts at orchestral music, you've even knocked vocals for being used in music.

So if I write a song and use synths, guitars, orchestral instruments and vocals, with that be 4 times boring and banal.

What type of sounds would you recommend we use in our songs?

  9. The problem is not with the existence of the materials. The major problem is with the ways new generations interpret and put them into practice.

I would record my music with 4 or 8 (nowadays 16 or 24) track machines, just like the old days.
the drums would be much more work to record it.
(Nowadays, to program nice sounding drums is very timesaving!)

All I need is a tape recorder, some cans, springs, metal things, sm58. and some wine.

Well... with 16 guitars, 2 basses, ukulele, bouzuki and various percussion plus a Soundcraft mixer and a 8 (+16) tracks digital recorder I think I would keep on doing just the same :)

Easy. I would carve grandfather's old wooden leg into something that resembles a didgeridoo and use it to make surreptitious farting noises. Then, I would look at everyone in the room and, with with an assertive stare in my eyes, ask them, "Fam? Was that you?"

Probably get flamed on AS for making music that sounds like shit, tho'. :bash:

Most of my music is guitars, vocals and drums. I'd just have to ask my drummer friend to play, and record demos to something like those old Tascam cassette multitracks, with one sm57 on the entire kit, but I'd probably go to a real studio to record my albums.

  18. Guys and Gals, I'm leaving this awesome place now and you won't see me again. I've always loved you. I want to appreciate your fervent attendances in my threads. I swear to God that I've always yearned for thinking about making good music.:winker:

It seems that you ask an opened question, but you already have your prejudices.
