recently i heard some growing buzz about AMD Ryzen for music productions, but I have not put time to learn about it yet.
maybe include the processor among your options.

Basically, build a gaming PC, instead of spending all your money on graphic card(s), get a third tier one, something like Nvidia xx50 or 60. And allocate the money saved towards a better CPU (most gamers use i5s, you want an i7 minimum). get a quiet case (no glass windows), quiet fans, and NO WATERCOOLING (Pump makes noise, hard to build, always risk of leaks). Also think storage, small SSD for OS (250gb) and larger one for projects and most used samples/libraries and a large mechanical one for other storage.

Actually, the most important thing is the OS that you use and how tuned it is for audio/video - real time performance. Meaning no anti-virus and Internet. Or you can have Internet but no anti-virus. That spells death with Windows. You better make sure you use some other computer for Internet or you install VirtualBox and virtual OS for browsing. You have to get away without anti-virus somehow because it tasks your computer incredibly at all times.

W7 is the recommended OS at this time. OSX 10.12 Sierra is second. In every case it is better to use the older OS if you can. Apple's OS is kinda trickier in that regard. You can use older OS-X but some newer programs won't work. Thanks Apple! And fuck you double penetration in your arse and pussy simultaneously. Might as well give us a BJ. That goes for Microshit, too.

Couple of more things regarding hardware... you shouldn't get the motherboard with the most features, just the ones you need. Like, you don;t care about the audio chip on it, for example, you should disable it anyway. You should disable all the features you don't use, in BIOS. The less you use, the better the real-time performance of a crappy OS that Windows, or OSX is.

On the other hand you can just pick up any PC and make music... these are all just finesses that make your PC perform at its best for anything, actually. Video editing, for example. Try doing video editing on a PC that some rookie assembled and installed and you'll see what I mean. Anti-virus, Microsoft messanger starting when you boot it... and so on. It takes 5 minutes to even boot it, so you can start working. A work of "art". My systems start immediately when booted. It takes 20 seconds or so and you can start working on your tunes.

Currently I like to use Asus Prime Z270-K [or Z170-A] motherboards for music computers [it's got PCI slots]. Accompany it with a quality Seasonic or Corsair power supply [you should *never* buy a cheap PSU!] and a mid-range or whatever range CPU and you've got yourself a quality PC. One tricky thing is DDR4 memory. You should get the fastest one you can. At least 3200MHz. Kingston or G.Skill.

But really, what I said makes just a little difference. But that difference can be big for people who make music professionally and record lots of tracks real-time with the lowest possible latency.

If you're making tunes to impress your girlfriend you can make it with any PC or Mac, really. :headbang:

p.s. I don't recommend so called "gaming motherboards" as they are full of unnecessary features - stupid "bling" and more expensive. You can get a real workhorse "pro" motherboard for less money. Forget the "features". They only take resources and make recording more troublesome. Settle for the features you really need. The less - the better.

I think we have established that the statement

    is Demonstrably false.
the actual most important things in REALITY are,

    1.motherboard.
    2.CPU.
    3.RAM
    4.SSD.
    5.Power supply

these are the MOST important things . ( in no order they all equally important)

a operating system is so much less important, that all it HAS to be is what ever software you intend to use, and which one will suit you best for what you want to accomplish.
(i recommend win 10) macos could be good win7 possibly too.

just trying to be helpful to the OP no offense.(no ill feelings directed towards anyone homie)

lololol another great post MMJ2017. You must be really proud of yourself. Thanks for a good laugh.

Now when you've finished trolling, can we go back to the *serious subject*, your majesty? Go play with your toys.

Sure you recommend W10. I had no doubts. You get what you deserve. ;P

No offence, also. I've been doing this for more than 20 years and really do know what I'm talking about, so I don't think my effort to help deserves to be trolled like that.

Bro there is nothing wrong with windows 10 and audio, especially if you have good specs... i am confused with people talking down on windows 10. It's simple. Find a version of windows 10 pro that is stable enough, disable updates, disable anti virus and make sure you have protection when browsing through the web. It's terrible to recommend windows 7 especially if you are getting new hardware. Which is a huge deal.....

Yep, Win 10 Enterprise LTSB here, definitely faster than win7. Cubase 9.5, Resonic Pro and Magix Vegas are highly optimized for Win 10(those are the softwares, that I use alot)

For graphic card, I would choose something cheap as said before. I usually get along with passive one, but now I have GT610, but it´s not that noisy even if the computer is right next to me on the hard floor.
Oh, and yes, it handles pretty nicely video editing too, I use any material up to 1080p resolution, haven´t needed 4K yet.

Do you have win10 installed on an SSD? Crazy the difference it makes having it installed on SSD vs HDD when it comes to speeds

Nobody took notice of what I said here, it seems. Let me quote myself:
"On the other hand you can just pick up any PC and make music... these are all just finesses that make your PC perform at its best for anything, actually. "
and: "But really, what I said makes just a little difference. But that difference can be big for people who make music professionally and record lots of tracks real-time with the lowest possible latency."

The post I made was made for people who take their business seriously. It is your choice to choose whatever you want from hardware to OS, it will work. I'm not saying W10 with whatever randomly chosen hardware won't work, or that it will set your house on fire. :) I'm just saying what's better to use and how to achieve it. Simple.

Peace W10 fans. Everybody knows W10 works and that you're as satisfied as being massaged by two beautiful Thai girls, thanks. :)

It feels nice to know that even after W7 there will be some life in Windows left to be able to do some serious business with it, too - a very cut down, very "lite" W10 LTSB version. Good.

Until that time W7 will continue to work just beautifully and with the newest hardware, too. By saying that it doesn't work with W7 you show us how much you know about Windows and computers.

Oh, and yes W7 works faster and more reliable with everything. :P

really glad some current mainboards still feature pci slots, like the above mentioned z-270. older used cards like the creamware soniccore pulsars are pretty cheap these days and rock solid.
now i dont know if this applies to win7, 8 and 10 or refers to w2k, me and early xp only. and if its driver related or a general advice (sounds like the latter)
exerpt from a pdf packaged with the creamware user manual.
    no joke, they should know...

    - turn off hyperthreading, ssl, other cpu features

    see

for a surprise. if your asio drivers arent optimized for it, you may be better off without these improvements

You say W10 fans but we're all in the same damn boat here as windows users what are you saying? I'm talking about driver support, especially with new hardware being released today. Are you saying all the newest hardware will work perfectly and constantly getting support for win7? How are you supposed to move forward? My friend has the Apollo 8 and guess what? It's Windows 10 only. I think i can make the assumption that most if not all audio interfaces with usb-c will only be supported with win10

Yes, I have W10 on SSD/SATA3 and it´s fast. But my next build will be with m.2´s, my friend has it and i´m so jealous :D
Can´t really see reason for HDD, since the SSD prices have came down, expect for storage/backup use.
(..but I still have my Kontakt libraries and Audio on HDD, no money to upgrade yet, ´cause I need to upgrade almost everything, i5-2500k here)

    @SineWave
I tried both, W7 and W10 x64, tests where done last weekend, no reason to downgrade anymore :)
I do have disabled everything, as I did with W7 obliviously, always tweaked for audio:winker:

With a custom water cooler we can put the pump/radiator into another room, but must
be sure the pump is strong enough.
One time in another house I put the pump/radiator(no fan) immersed into the house water reservatory. :)
