Seriously not trying to be funny, but this needs to be mixed before any mastering:
vocals too pushed back and essy
the bass is there, but seems to be just floating (don't even know how to explain that).
It just doesn't feel "even" and balanced.
This is why that human touch is needed more.
I did enjoy hearing this after so long, though. And the performance itself was great!

i like it brother ! i know the work involved >>> i do believe it could be a lil better mixed personally >>> but that is of personal taste as i stated... as of now it sounds good to me >>> but if you like the way it is could be a good candidate for stem mastering \m/

I really like the cover! Great job. Bass drum and bass could use a little tweaking, rebalance it a bit and it would sound pro-grade, i would definitely mix the bass more present than this, or maybe it's just the kick that is not sitting well enough, probably both. Some of the guitars are probably a bit too harsh, yeah vocals are a bit essy but who cares, it's a rock track, the attitude is there. It's such a pleasure to listen to great performances that it's easy to forget about the little mixing errors. What did you use to get the guitar sound by the way?

    It is decently done.

Could use a bit of balance, but never be ashamed of what you sound like.

There are some timing issues, if you re-track some parts and redo the vocal, try being a bit further away and a little off-axis from the microphone. Microphones are not snickers bars and you don't need to always eat it for it to be do its job. If it was a live gig and you had a drum set behind you and others playing all around a bit of proximity and sharp cardiod pattern helps with rejection, but if you are recording in a somewhat quiet place and rejection isn't at the top of the list, leave some air between you and the microphone. That way people will not have to hear your nostrils working, it will also cut down on the plausive and sibilant sounds that come from pushing air into the capsule when you mouth rushes air out quickly.

If you want a microphone to capture a proximity effect, try to record with a second one at the same time, a little further back 12-18 inches away 15-30 degrees off axis and 12-18 inches higher than your close mic. Before recording on at least one take add some timing ticks (you can bang two drum sticks together - count in if you are old school, w/e) just to have a reference for phase issues if they pop up later. Once you that - don't move the microphones any more and try to stay in the same place when you are singing as much as possible unless you are working the microphones for effect.

I really enjoyed it. If you polish it a bit more, I will help you out however I can. I can tell you put in a lot of time and I myself am a big Tom Petty fan.

    Good job.

hey man , thanks for the info !
that was the third or fourth take on the vox , & i am guilty ! i was pretty close to the mic , ha
really hate to re track as i am not the best vocalist , but i can do it :
so , throw the gain up a bit & back off some ?
using a pretty decent bluebird , BLUE Mic , so _-
really appreciate the feedback & tips -- i will re-track those vocals this weekend , or ltr today -

Upload your tracks (all the same length) at the highest quality, and I'll find a time to play around with the mix. PM me if interested.

Good work. I really like it.

Don't touch the gain - on a modern interface your peaks can be anywhere between -18 and -31 and your recording will still be 100% usable.

When you go to a movie, normal dialogue is recorded at -31dBFS peak from about 8-12 feet away on overhead boom microphone. They have no problems working with those levels or playing them back audibly. This was even the standard when PPM and tape was used and recordings only have about 67dBs of useful signal. Now with modern 22bit (24bit) interfaces your microphone and the ambient noise floor are going to be the biggest contributors to background junk. Even you are in a somewhat noisy recording environment - adding more gain to the signal doesn't do anything but highlight the noise. If you personally need to hear yourself while recording - create a cue mix and adjust your personal volume that way, but let the recording itself have a lot of headroom.

    very interesting !

i always try to get my levels pretty high , as far as the WAV looks -- i`ve always wondered when i see other DAWS and the WAVS look so small & then there is the opposite where the WAVS are all bricked out !?
i try & stay in the middle or just above : ha

but i get what u are saying , makes perfect sense :

    @mozee @Beth @digitaldragon @Jaymz

Hey people, this could be a chance to jump start the little project of mix collab we discussed before. I know @Jaymz was not in that conversation from before, but it seems he could be interested. The multitracks of this song are available, and if @akashaman doesn't mind, we could all try our hand at mixing this song and learn from everyone else's approach. I'm gonna try my hand anyway. Any takers?

Sounds like the start of a plan.

if we can get the rest in here or cross post on that thread and like I said before it needs to be broken down into 2 phases.

    A mix with - dynamics
A master - at fixed loudness level to be decided on by w/e

because if you put chocolate cake on top of my steak, and then top with ice cream, in interest of serving me a fast meal / I wont be able to tell which one tastes like what... only what chocolate cake steak ice cream tastes like.
