When I'm using zoom with my collaborator, I noticed a huge amount of delay of the computer original stereo sound (up to 2-3 seconds!) with respect to the internal microphone we use to talk, almost in real-time.
So the voice is in sync while the audio I stream to them from my desktop is 2-3 seconds late.
This amount of latency seems to be independent of which app I use, it both happens for Logic as well as for a movie in VLC, for instance.

Anyone has noticed, solved or can guess the cause of it?

We both have fibre to the home internet so I don't think it can be that problem.

 

Why is not always configured for low latency?

The streaming server as well as the video player normally use a buffer time. Data is preloaded to compensate for line fluctuations. Data packets are not transmitted 100% smoothly on the Internet. For some data packets the transmission time is only 10 ms (milliseconds) for others 500 ms (0.5 sec.). In the case of a connection via 3G / UMTS or LTE (and even more so with a satellite connection), some data packets only arrive after 1 to 2 seconds.

- This is of little relevance for conventional downloads and loading a web page with text and images, since the data is simply assembled at the receiver (regardless of the transmission time) when it arrives. The content of the web page builds up piece by piece with the data received. It is primarily the amount of data that is transmitted in total that is decisive, not the time that individual data packets take.
- In live streaming, however, data packets arriving late are "too late". If the stream has already played the position in time to which the data packets belong and arrive late, the data is useless. The viewer may then have noticed a jerking/hanging in the video. If data packets arrive late not only one by one, but in rows, the livestream stops for reloading, and sections of the playback may be missing or, in the worst case, the stream can no longer be played.
