RIP Zippy (but in the last years it was geo blocked anyway).
but int he beginning of 2008 and later on - it was so awsome to use. so thanks for that Zippy.

and many more will follow, because of new EU copyright law, where owner of the service is responsible for user's uploaded content, no sane filesharing provider will be able to comply with that

And again, unfortunately, one of the good ones is gone...! I have always enjoyed using it.

    ORIGINAL
All sorts of adblockers, whether built into the browser, as add-ons, or in the form of DNS services. Sure, we all use them, but they take away any control the site owner has over the site. Eventually we get to the point where a vicious cycle begins, in order to pay for the server infrastructure you are forced to place more and more ads, then users fire up more and more adblockers and we get to a point like today.

Rising electricity prices. Over the past year, electricity prices have gone up 2.5 times, which, with
a large number of servers, gives a significant increase in costs that we have no way to balance.

There are still a bunch of smaller reasons, but we could write a book on this, and probably no one would want to read it.

I think the major cause is the law enforcement and the sanctions, blocking the site in certain regions.

And about using adblockers, when I sent links to friends to download a file I wanted to share with them and they didn't have adblocker on their browser, the page was full of banner of pornsites. It also happened when I had my adblocker disabled temporarily and visited zippy or other sites. That's not just inappropriate but also scary for people who expect a harmless page for harmless usage.

It was great for attachments too big for email: fast upload and fast download.
    What a pity!

more information? lets say it operates and also is being hosted outside of EU, would the law still be relevant?

Totally untrue, worked 100% fine and I lived both in EU and non-EU countries then.

Which country was geo-blocking it? Never had any issue in 10 years using it.

Also if it didn't work I guess my VPN would have solved the issue as I always use one. But even without VPN like I said it always worked 100% of the time.

I guess they're closing for different reasons.

To me I only downloaded free mp3s with it, for the rest of things I always used the download services like RG 99.99% of the time.

It's really a shame for the mp3s because you could search any "song name x zippyshare" in Google and that's it download any song in a second.

Haven't been able to reach Zippy for years due to geoblocking, so no much difference here.
