It depends from which kind of filters you're looking for.

If you want clean, basic, transparent filters you can't go wrong with Acon Digital or FabFilter.

If you want analog emulation filters than Acustica Audio, DMG, Tokyo Dawn Labs Eq, PSP, IK Multimedia are good.

For production purposes like lfo automation, resounances, sweep things, moog emulation filters (Arturia etc.), daw stock ones and goodhertz (how clean this ones are), that's all you need.

I just like using the native Ableton Live Auto Filter. Other than that the SoundToys FilterFreak 1 and FilterFreak 2 are my choice.

I use the Sonalksis Creative Filter most of the time, it's the most transparent one I've found and it has the exact buttons I want a filter to have without the 1500 extra features including FM capabilities, a built in mastering suite and a comprehensive distortion and saturation tab like some of these other plugins have for no reason.

I also use Pro-Q2 sometimes just because I need a filter and it's already open on my screen

Thx for keepin me up to date. I used to play a minor chord on my Korg Poly 800 /Juno 106
, thru a filter with midi capability. So I could just use some interesting parts of the chorded string, then thru a reverb/Delay, to get some basic channel/dub chord stuff.
Used lately the waves filter to get similar results, but find it a bit difficult to use, so

Ableton's autofilter most of the time (can be replaced with cytomic's The Drop in other daws). Fabfilter's Volcano is absolutely amazing too. Metafilter from waves is the option as well.

for a filter(not eq), arturia mini filter was enough, but for the sound coloring filter, soft plugins doesnt work

  10. I tried Audio Damage AD043 Filterstation and was very impressed by the smooth quality of its filters. Up until this point I would FF Volcano if I wanted movement, but no longer. Also, you folks might enjoy those new NYRV plugins, the 8k is incredibly fantastic on my voice to give it an advantage in a busy-ish mix. They supposedly mimic the Abby Road filters. I just like them lots. Gonna have to throw some change to the Dev.

Filters are like distortions to me : never enough ;)
    I prefer soul over features.
And it is heaven to me when you get BOTH

    Here are some :

    EpiCentre
ohmforce plugins (combining distortion AND filter)
Driver (NI) : amazing disto AND filter
    Frantic : nice soul
    WOW (formants)

My fav for now ? Drive, from NI

+1 for FilterFreak 1/2 and especially The Drop for ITB. I think FilterFreak sounds slightly better, but the modulation-setup in The Drop is just super dank and a little bit more in-depth. There's also SCAMP by Admiral Quality. Soundwise I quite like it, but the UI/UX is not on par with Soundtoys/Cytomic IMO. Still worth a try though!

If you want to consider hardware, you could get a Monotron or MS20-mini for cheap and use the filters via external in. Added bonus would be that you get a synth as well.
