I may not be easy to find out for sure what a vst effect is really doing to your sound.
There are FREE Vst that have been programmed by Christian-W. Budde that are made just for this.
A lot of pro vst programmer use them to verify what they are doing.

VST Plugin Analyser, deconvolver, ABX Tests etc...

You can have them by visiting the developper's page: Here

One of them is called Vst plugin analyzer This extremely useful PC-only utility if you want to learn more about what particular VST plug-ins are doing to your sound.
Widely used by plug-in developers to test their own creations...
You just load in your favorite VST plug-in, load in one of its presets (or adjust the plug-in controls manually), and then run the various test options to see a plot of the frequency response (great for seeing why one EQ or preamp sounds different from another, examine any distortion (desirable or not), explore the input/output characteristics of (for instance) compressors, and lots more...

Yeah, this is a tool I've used for years. Christian Budde knows his stuff (also check his other interesting VSTs).

It's cool to find out some plugin's quirks and possible bugs (for good and for bad).

Thank you, Olymoon, Christian's software is a great help, indeed.
Pity the VST Plugin Analyzer doesn't accept 64-Bit plugins (afaik)...

Yes I agree. Christian is preparing a VST Analyser V2, that will accept 64 bit plugins and will have an OSX version but he needs some donation help to go on with this.
He have already founded almost all the cost but he still miss 1500 euros to complete his budget.
You can see a detailed explanation about his project and his needs here
