XLR Out to XLR in

Discussion in 'Soundgear' started by Lenny Belardo II, Mar 10, 2021.

  1. Im having a mental blank lately and I can't remember the correct connectivity when connecting mic preamp to DAW.
So, I have a phantom powered microphone which relies on obtaining power from either the preamp or the audio Interface. Until now I power up the mic on the preamp and then run it into a line in on my UA Apollo.
But is it possible to run the XLR out from the preamp into an XLR input on the Apollo?
If so, I assume the preamp supplies the power and the XLR in on the interface remains a passive input.
I am attempting to use the Unison function while retaining the clarity of the preamp.

Yes you can. You will be feeding a hot signal into something that expects a very weak one but if you like the sound then it's goofd. I wouldn't crank up the preamp too much as headroom can become an issue. I think you can switch the pre-amp ins to +4dBu in the control panel and pad them if you want to reamp. Only issue would be noise floor if you running two analog preamps in series, I don't think you'll have that problem with the Apollo's ins.

I am not quite understanding you here but it it doesn't affect the rest of it.

    ------ EDIT -----

Meh you can't switch input headroom unless you set the input to LINE and then Unison isn't available.

Was messing with it because, I've never actually paid attention as I've had no reason to.

Never even looked before. So your best bet is just to [PAD] the incoming signal if it comes in too hot from the external preamp and adjust to taste with Unison and emu as that will allow you to drive your preamp above nominal S/N and then use the increased DR/THD of the in to attenuate and reamp.

If you like what you hear then, you like what you hear, it's not going to break anything.

  4. Works beautifully. Using my SPL Channel One for compression and de-essing, then into the Neve Unison Channel Strip for tone control. With my Neumann TLM103 I'm getting that magical resonant deep radio announcer tone. No matter what I did I couldn't get it sounding rich going into the line input.

maybe you'll get a kick out of our Curva Chiusa concert video IN THE VATICAN...

The inside church with congregation scene is not the vatican, but another church is the center of the city.

    Cool.

As long as you got what you wanted then the experiment is a success.

Typically interfaces with combo xlr 1/4" jacks are wired such that the XLR goes through the mic pre while the 1/4" bypasses it.
The unison pre's mess with input impedance so "double preamping" may cause issues.

However there are no rules - well other than don't run a 10V eurorack signal into your line in.

    I like the dog part!

Just imagine if the frequency of the tuning fork woke up one of those dead guys in the crypt, or was just pefect enough to shatter a lid! You'd be in soooo much trouble...but it would be the first true miracle.

It was illegal in the Vatican City to do any video of JPII's tomb. We may have risked our lives and we won't know until it's too late if we're going to hell.

I guess at this point I can't even sell my soul to devil because he may already have it!!!

Some experimental tuning forks could create Heaven on Earth or raise the Devil from the bowels of Etna.
Waking the Dead would be a great gig.
