Worried about the ethical implications of using abandonware from a company shut down in 2015, or financial disaster after Apple tracking you down for using it?

 

Camel Audio is long gone and their plugins are discontinued. As of such, there's no way to transfer a license and you'd have no access to official downloads or support.

Just get the pirated ones and be done with it, they work just fine. Well, maybe on Apple Silicon you might have problems as they will never be updated to that.

 

That guy's fingerprints are still all over in Logic, even though he does not work for them anymore. No need to mourn a few dead 32 bit plugins there.

 

Camel's plugins did make the jump to 64bit thankfully. But yeah, Alchemy is still excellent in Logic, but I don't think we ever got replacements for Phat/Crush/Space.

 

PhatFX and StepFX plugins in Logic are so clearly influenced by his designs (x/y pad on both). The even further out there is RemixFX. It's like the Kaoss Pad on steroids plugin version. Crazy and entertaining on a touch screen via Logic Remote app for iPad. (That one is more influence than direct work).

PhatFX - replacement of Camelphat and Camelcrusher, sort of stuck together.
StepFX - replacement of Camelspace.

Neither are direct replacements of course, but they are obvious morphodite versions of them. Maybe "DNA" might be a better analogy than simple fingerprints. If you use a synth or plugin long enough, they can slap another style GUI on it and you will still know where the ideas under the hood really came from.

For some reason, I remember needing to use 32lives! to get the three of those working in Logic, but it's been a while since I bothered. Almost everything (that isn't hardware) can get replaced by something "close enough" if you spend the time figuring it out, instead of figuring out how to get the old thing working. It usually takes an "official update" to really do some damage.

 

This is true, but replacement works best when starting from a scratch. Recreating anything that's more complex than a simple FX (like one distortion or one filter is a pain).

Phat is just too convenient combination of shit that I shudder the day when I have to give it up. But in general, yes, dwelling too much on the past is not very productive.

Instead of chasing new operating systems, just stick with one of the old ones so you need not lose out on Phat, Space, Alchemy, or Cameleon for that matter. They all still work in 7!

Ummh... Camel Audio plugins work just fine in 10 and 11. Doesn't change the fact that they're abandoned.
