Anyone still using it?

 

I'd love to utilze my old machine somehow. How are you using it? Sometimes I think about wiping everything on it then running a super old daw version on it for fun but then I remember the hassle it would take.

 

Ableton is pretty much the same as the first ever version they released (especially the UI). I think the problem with setting up a old school DAW machine is the plugins and maybe some audio interface drivers. Other than that, it should work fine

 

Absolutely yes.
But the idea of having to choose between one OS or another is simply crazy. Just use them all.
Your time costs far more than the hardware, so just have many boxes.
My old XP stuff still ain't broke, doesn't need fixing, and won't be thrown away until the physical machines die
(and even then I have backup hardware and system images to clone)
Exactly the same is true for W7, W8, W10, and Hackintoshes.
The OS has always been overwhelmingly the least important part of my music making toys.
Having each platform set up explicitly as a music making box is all that matters.

 

I still have the the cd/usb installations. I did an install recently for someone on an old laptop, works great.
Not much has really changed its only the manufacturers who are not supplying the drivers anymore the OS itself is stable.
Same with Windows 7.
Glitz is for the masses, what is under the hood is what matters. Also less bloat and spyware than the new OS, which exists only to gather user information.

 

Don't have any machines to run XP on anymore, but I've got a couple of VMs running XP for legacy stuff and visiting old projects etc.

 

I had been using it for 17 years, including SP1, SP2 and SP3, until march, 2018. From it I jumped directly to win 10, with no regrets.

 

Nope. Most of my projects use +40 gigs of ram, so having 8gb max at disposal (and only with XP pro x64) would be quite the drawback. Also most of the hardware and software wouldn't be compatible. But I guess if you use very old tech, which for some reason can't be emulated/wrapped in a modern system, why not use XP to run it? Whatever floats your boat

 

Logic Platinum and Reason 5 run well on older XP machines, as does Ableton Live 4 (the first version with MIDI support), Orion Platinum, Reaper, ...

 

Which daw and plugins were you using? So interested to hear what you say because I've never run into someone that's used it up until 2018. You probably have lots of info to share about gear.

 

I vote for Windows 7.

 

I loved Window XP, the Microsoft bloat went downhill after that.

I'm OS agnostic and I run whatever is necessary to be able to use my hardware in the most efficient way. I use XP, Windows 7, and Debian Linux 10, currently. Setting up a Hackintosh with Mojave, too. Whatever works best. It's nice to have multiple machines and options.

Also using QEMU with Virtual/client OSes in each host OS. I discovered that QEMU works better than VirtualBox [for running Reaper and plugins] and it's Open Source/free.

WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL SP3 X86 - INTEGRAL EDITION 20th March2021 ??

 

I have two old PC's running XP, being used as synths and effects units. Both computers are equipped with multiple Creamware Scope PCI DSP boards that are communicating in real time via MIDI and multiple AES/EBU and ADAT to the main system. Despite the age, those systems are capable of under ms real time processing and the quality is very good. To access the desktops I use a remote application called Radmin which is very lightweight and at the same time it allows to see real time meters on the remote machine without loosing frames.

 

I loved my old XP 64 Pro but had to evolve, most new plugins and programs that I required would no longer work with it.

 

Yes, the 20th Anniversary Edition of course.

 

True, I'm not even a Ableton user, but was shocked to see the first version basically looked the same as the latest, meanwhile FL (my DAW) and others look from the period age (not a bad thing tho, they look very nostalgic). Wonder if people, back then, thought Ableton was weird looking or not.
