Maybe im daft but not a punk lol anyways i find this most annoying but everytime i wanna lets say look at youtube and then open a standalone audio vst the two can never play at once. What im getting at is there a way to have multiple audio applications open for example a daw open and a standalone application be able to play audio at same time. Is this only a windows 7 thing? Curious to know how windows 8 handles this.

are you running an ASIO driver for your DAW?, try changing it to another sound driver, they both need to share the same one, ASIO doesn't like sharing

Search the forums because this question has been answered before. Your card is in exclusive mode. Check the settings in your DAW and uncheck it. If you mean literally at the same time then you need to use two different devices such as your onboard audio and your soundcard. However if you mean you want to watch a tutorial on producing and switch to your DAW and try something out then exclusive mode needs to be unchecked.

Hi Catalyst. Your solution is not working with Asio4All afaik. This is a Windows 7 issue. Win 7 audio handling is different than Win XP, where you could do this. Thats why win7 sux. But this problem is discussed on internet since win7 is on market. And there is no workaround afaik.

    Cheers.

Install a second audio driver and set it as the default audio driver in control panel under "sound." Use your original asio drivers in your daw or standalone. Only one program per audio driver.

    @ DigiTal_Zero,

Not a full solution to your Request mainly because it seems that you want to absolutely get some different Apps (either DAWs, Standalone VST Plugins, YouTube,... ) to use the Audio Flow at the same time, but if you use the Option commonly found in most of the usual DAWs to liberate/freeing your 'ASIO' Driver(s) in the Background, you'll be able to switch from one App to the other one and get the Audio Signal(s) without any trouble... *yes*

Windows 7 is fine for audio if you know a few tweaks to set it up, like all of Windows. I run Ableton on both an iMac and a Windows 7 Professional laptop and can have very similar results with both. As of late, I have been mainly using the Windows laptop. Besides all the tweaks and optimizations, I have found a few great tools for dealing with the problem you are experiencing and in combination they can be quite flexible depending on what you need. For example, I was able to run a remote comping session with one of my artists on his computer at home using google hangouts to screen share my Arrangement window, using my built in microphone for my talkback through the chat session, and also I was able to stream the audio output of my DAW across the internet using ASIO at the same time! Here is what I use:

    1. Audio Switcher (allows you to quickly change/select system audio output and input device from taskbar)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/audioswitcher/

    2. ASIO4ALL (low latency ASIO driver for Windows which is what I use as the output in my DAW)
    http://www.asio4all.com/

and finally the glue that holds this all together, the fantastic and newly updated

    3. VB Voicemeeter (you can really just use this for everything and it should work just fine to mix both DAW and Youtube for instance)
    http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Voicemeeter/

Do a little reading, watch some tutorial videos on youtube, you'll figure it out!

    Good luck!

P.S. If anybody is interested in exactly how I set up a remote editing session with high quality stereo audio at low latency, send me a PM and I'll hit you up!

Set your DAW or Standalone to windows audio. It's not every complicated. It's been this was since win 98 and really is not windows fault that the software you chose to use, in this case a DAW or a stand alone VSTi is set to use something else all together and highjacks the audio from the OS.

Simples. *yes* set your program output to wasapi (shared mode)
win 7 cuts out the browser sound only if using asio, if the browser sound has been cut out restart browser to re-engage
the advice above maybe useful for some types of thing as is asiomulti but not neccessary to what you are asking

Not true, I do it all the time hence why I suggested it. The problem is people not knowing how to customize their setup not Windows.

OMG i am daft, see i knew cubase had that option of releasing audio drivers in background but i dont use cubase anymore, i was under the impression that asio was the best so i was using asio all this time. I have tried other drivers. In ableton the only choice is asio and MME/Directx but everytime i switched to MME/Directx i experienced great latency until today i looked at the buffer samples and it was on like 3000 so i lowered it to 1024 and latency is down plus i can hear other apps now. Now in Studio One the only other choice i have is WIndows Audio and that doesnt work plus it limits bit rate to 16 bit at 44.1khz.

you can use reaper if you just want to experiment with a vst in a daw to a tutorial from the web. some standalone's will only give you a choice of asio anyway.
Asio needn't be used while working on some things, but it's just best practice to switch over to it before exporting, recording, bouncing or doing anything similar with your audio files.
Do you try the disabling of exclusive mode with win audio in studio one
I don't use it so I can't help by testing it for you, why I suggested reaper if you still had problems

OS X has Core Audio, low latency audio across the system and multiple apps natively!
There's petition to get similar thing to Windows 10:

With rearoute (Reaper) you can use two daws with one audio device. Otherwise, you need two devices. I can use M-audio delta with a daw, and onboard audio device and asio4all with another daw.

I only know what works in my own system and this is how it is:
Win7 x64, ASIO Drivers provided by the Focusrite Liquid57 audio interface. Sequoia is the DAW.
I tweaked nothing, I managed nothing. Everything is in default mode.
I can play sound in DAW and at the same time a vid on youtube or I can play 2 (or 3 or more) different vids on youtube at the same time and hear them all one on top of the other. I can insert a CD and hit play while listening to a song in youtube or web-radio etc etc.

    Same here..

Win7 64bit, Focusrite Asio driver, and using Ableton Live, but also Sequoia and others...
Never an issue..could listen to the DAW, Internet, Watch a movie by using any play.. and
    all 3 played together..

I'm using RME audio interface (Win7) without problem, but had to temporarily use a TC Electronic audio interface (ASIO) and the same thing happened with the TC Electronic one - could only use one software/sound at a time and it refused to share it. PITA!
When I got my RME audio interface back home everything was back to "normal", and the ASIO was shared with all programs that wanted to share sound.

I never found a clickable/uncheckable solution within Windows settings (or any ASIO settings, windows or DAW). So I know your frustration.

    @Catatlyst:

I dont understand what do you mean with 'uncheck exclusivemode in your DAW' Sounddriver exclusive mode to uncheck is only at windows audiopanel but not in the DAW or did i miss something??

I can never run Asio4All (e.g Ableton or other DAW) with Youtube watching with my Browser (Firefox).

    Cheers
