    GFYS! :snuffy:

    The most recent update changed my user settings, fonts, folder view, system restore points gone and creating new ones now disabled, color schemes and I am sure more yet to be discovered. On top of this, searching Bing for quick solutions has proved to be a total waste of time, none of the convoluted "fix" instructions have worked, so now I am wasting hours of my life again manually digging around and testing to reset things back to how I had them. And I am talking about just basic simple settings, nothing elaborate. I waited a day or two but got tired of seeing the stupid tray icon nag so I went ahead and did it against my better judgement.

    Yeah so to alleviate some frustration I needed to take this opportunity to say I fucking hate you Windows 11!!!! :trolls:

    Thank you.

    I hear you. I had the same experience while updating win10 3 years ago. The same problems: all my privacy settings were defaulted "for my best convenience" of course. I got so fed up that I migrated to Linux. I was amazed by the easiness of the process although I feared for my music stuff. It is unbelievable how easy it was for my daily things: email, surfing, simple photo and video things. No problem at all. And the windows emulator Wine is already working for a lot of windows programs out of the box. Turned out that even for simple music making Linux was working very well. Since I am really just an amateur hobbyist, I experience no problem. I guess when you're serious in making music, you probably need to do some extra learning to get special plugins working. Meanwhile I got several exotic plugins to work but I admit it took "some" time and extra help from friends all over the webforums. So my advice: stop using m$ stuff and start using Linux. You can simply try it out safely with an USB stick. Give it a try. I started with an external USB stick and after that installed it on an external SSD. Worked great!

    I feel your pain and you are correct about windows in general mortally sucking the giant rag... However, IMO, it's a few degrees better than having to deal with a shit show like apple os. At least with windows all your concerns that you mention can be avoided with user intervention and reverse engineering. With apple os, as an end user, you're stuck with what you have - you either like it or lump it. Any sort of *NIX on the PC side isn't currently a contender for doing any sort of media production. So.....we deal with windows. Personally, I recommend win10 but to each is own. Either Win OS can be made to STFU and comply with your demands.

    A few tips to better the win experience;

    1. Windows updates are shit. You DO NOT NEED THEM. Going along that vein the autonomous updater that gave you the jumbled mess you describe above should simply be turned off or rendered inert for 30-40 years.

    2. Win defender and ms edge... Get rid of them both. They are junk. Use FF or chrome (with modifications) for browsers and a 3rd party anti-virus and firewall.

    3. the ms-store. disable it all.

    4. If you can, rebuild your system with a LITE/SuperLITE iso like ghostspectre or some other such free install image. A good 80% of the garbage-ware is eliminated using an image like this.

    5. Go thru and turn off all services & tasks that are not needed POST install... There's a ton of them. IF you do some searching on this forum I posted some lists to get one started on this. I believe there are a few others as well...

    6. Do NOT logon to any microsoft account with the OS. There will sure as shit be a telemetry exchange, and attempts to undo your work to circumvent their bullshit will likely arise. Logging onto exchange servers (just email) with outlook is not invasive, but just make certain that office is setup to reject updates, and all office apps (except for outlook for email) are completely blocked on the internet side...

    Once you have optimized the windows installation the os will run smooth, trouble free, and your privacy will stay intact.. You wont get surprised with ads on your desktop, or bullshit like what you experienced above, and once you have a working system streamlined - make a complete backup image of your system (you should be doing this regularly anyway). Use a third party imager like acronis, norton ghost, etc... DO NOT USE Windows Backup for this.

    Here are two options for future use

    - - - - - - - -

    * Chris Titus Tech Windows Utility

    Paste the following into Notepad

    Save it

    Rename the file extension from .txt to .ps1

    Each time you wish to use it, right-click on the file and select “Run with PowerShell”

    Once you run this in PowerShell and the GUI loads, navigate to the “Updates” tab and select “Security Settings”

    This will:

    * Delay Windows Feature updates by 2 years
    * Delay Windows Security updates by 4 days

    - - - - - - - -

    * Winhance by Memstechtips

    Go to the following address and download the latest version of “Winhance.ps1”

    Once downloaded, right-click on the file, select “Run with PowerShell,” input “R” and press ENTER to run

    You will be required to select “OK” for one or two pop-up dialogue windows

    Once the GUI loads, navigate to the “Optimize” tab located on the left side of the GUI

    Select “Windows Updates,” then click “Apply” in the top-right corner of the GUI

    This will:

    * Disable automatic updates
    * Delay Windows Feature updates by 1 year
    * Delay Windows Security updates by 1 week
    * Disable automatic upgrade from Win10 to Win11
    * Disable delivery optimization
    * Disable automatic updates for Microsoft Store apps
    * Disable automatic archiving of unused apps
