    True. Nice post, bloke.

Music was always more about entertainment than art - trying to evoke deeper feelings, open people's minds to something good, start revolutions etc... The most stupid and simple music [to those with good music taste, which is kinda subjective] with stupid but memorable lyrics is what people like the most!

What we're experiencing now, and was also present in the centuries before, like you mentioned, is extreme commercialisation of music. Common folk have no complaints [except the usual old folk complaining that modern music sucks ], only musicians who are trying to make art and live from it. Nowadays it is more about the choice between making money and making art. Kinda like in the "good old times". I mean, who got the job of being a musician at some court? The most entertaining one. :wink:Just another court's jester. We have a pop music scene full of jesters. We've had it for a long time, it's just peaking now due to social media and different kind of lifestyle...

There are aircraft carrier loads of musicians who are trying to make art. They are the ones with empty stomachs or forced to play crap just to have something to eat [like tons of Jazz musicians for instance]. Bitter truth and nobody can do anything about it. :( Just pick the least crappy stuff. Kinda like parties - there aren't good parties, just better or worse, because all politicians are in it for their own benefit, nothing else.

Maybe those number are just because "old" people are the main consumer of music who still buy music, like CD or even downloading mp3. Which represent more in sales than streaming (like 1 sell = 1000 streams or something like that).

Those who consume older music also are sort of stuck with what they have and tend to go with the 500 biggest album they already know (often ignoring shitty music from those era, because we usually keeps only the hits from the past, not the shit).

When everyone here will be dead or in their 80-90s, they will be surounded by Justin's Bieber and Drake's nostalgics, who complain about today's kid's music that they don't understand, and the Beattles or James Brown will be seen as some sort of old genius from history books, the same way today kids look at Duke Ellington or Glenn Miller.

Or maybe everything will be about old artist cause it's cheaper to promote now that touring is not relevent anymore and the right are own by the majors :)

You could have chosen this one, which includes a vocal masterclass :)

Yes, that was pretty great. Neal Schon's guitar work is stellar, the band is as tight as it gets and Steve Perry as you say is giving a vocal masterclass, but I just can't palette those guys for some reason.

    No music really ever dies.
There is a reason some works / tunes become labelled 'timeless'. Some of them were written a long time ago some recently and likely, some in the future. A piece of music is good or it is not. If it is good it will probably never die.
As for musicians writing for popularity or the art, both have been going on for centuries. It is not worth suggesting that one does not exist as is dispelled by history books and those weren't written by victors because other than musicians sleeping around on their wives who killed them, wars tend not to aim to kill off musicians purposely.

Musians perhaps might not die purposely, though war with The Devil and you might lose your very soul.

    Old: since Edison - 1.01.1980.
Introducing techno, rhythm machines, synths and finally DAWs ruined the music. You do not have to know any instrument or musical raining to make music - and for that reason it is called 'new'.

There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds.

What genre of music are you talking about?
All I know is this -- whenever I go into a store, and they have the music playing in the background, it's always 80s music.
The popularity of older songs might say something about the current music industry as well -- the music industry doesn't know what listeners want anymore. But the music industry is sure pushing it's rap hip-hop.

Disagree. DAWs, drums machines, sequencers etc. are just new instruments. We just should be good at using them. But we rarely are. As we rarely are good on playing pianos or guitars.

How about recordings? Did they kill music? Why recodings are better than DAWs and sequencers?

The problem comes from record companies who only sell pre-made music and don't search for/develop artists anymore. They refuse to invest in productions and expect artists to provide produced tracks. They distribute "yogurts" instead of producing music (with all that it envolves: hiring great musicians, sound engineers, producers, etc). And the worst is that they make even more profit with that, so it's not gonna change.
The other factor is that artists now have become tramps who are happy when they can make 5000$ out of their music. (thats what you get for 1 million views on spotify)

As long as some still buy the junk it will be produced. Stop buying the junk and then it will disappear too.
Unfortunately, many have reached the lowest end of taste.

The music business has always sucked......but it's now taken sucking to a whole new level.
I agree with the previous statement. The record companies are no longer producing music.
they simply produce "product". How that product is made is irrelevant to them.
And as far as performing "artists" go, they don't care if you can sing....or play. They've
got machines for that now. All they are concerned about is your look and your ability
to shake your ass. Joni Mitchell put it quite well:

I heard someone from the music business saying they are no longer looking for talent, they want people with a certain look and a willingness to cooperate."

Musicians have ALWAYS been just product to the bean counters at the vast majority of labels, but at least in the past there were at least a goodly number of AR folk who had a genuine love of music and a sincere relationship with the artists who they were allowed to foster. Record companies and distributors like Spotify and their ilk always sucked but now they seem to just be a hungry pool of zombie piranha looking to eat the brains of the already brainless.
