why you should USE Hardware synths

Discussion in 'Software' started by Kate Middleton, Mar 16, 2024.

  1. Hardware synths are definitely more tactile and performative. With fast editing options if its packed out with knobbage.

And its true you can't hardware mod in software.

But most will never do that.

If youre not performing or modding, software's great I think.

Software sound manipulation tools are leagues ahead of hardware now, so everything ends up back in the box eventually. I like the lightning fast construction and the flexibility of a DAW workflow, so I jam on hardware and turn it into sound packs to use in my DAW. I wouldn't call it linear, I define my limitations?

But, I think modular might be an evil addiction that tricks you into creating mediocre electronic noodles forever. I stay well away from it, even though it looks really cool as you stand there tweakin your knobs!

Well, I still don't know if I can call what I make "music".
But i can't really call it "potato", either, so what the hell.

I still have mine. Its cheap, feels cheap, sound cheap, but its fun.

you know thats not true. If the sound is thin, It's not the plugin's fault

its the just the overdriven click of the envelope and he increase it by feedback.

The thing about plugins is 10 keyboards, take as much room as 1. not so much for "real" keyboards.
even for pianos, I can have 10 different pianos in my notebook, and switch between them with a simple knob..

I love hardware, own too much, but when it comes to VSTI - for me a much better choice than the real thing.. (plus , don't need to buy 10 dust covers, 10 cables, 10 outlets, 10 chairs, and 10 sippy cups)

The Oxford definition - so I am trying to put 'cheating' into context
    upload_2024-3-18_3-58-40.png

The only two relative synonyms seems to be 'to fool' or deceive.
Honestly, with many vst's being emulations, I suppose it could be termed a form of deception, but not really. I only say that because nearly every studio with few exceptions, are digital. So digital emulations make sense rather than being any form of deception.
If it is related to performance, where one person uses a computer because they cannot play, that is something totally different and not what the topic is. So I cannot agree that it is any form of deception or 'cheating'. It is called technological advancement.
Also, if you love playing and the touch and feel of piano/keyboard, go for it! For some people it is the end result that matters most and for others, it is how they got there. Whichever MO you fit into, both are valid.

The upper part is not very important, the lower part is important and the interesting thing is that no one knows how to work with the lower part. Whether you count software or hardware.:winker:

Using any tool or any support is cheating? What about your fingers? A screwdriver? A car? Riding on a horse? Wearing shoes? Guitars, violins, drums, any "instrument" ? This whole "discussion" is as stupid as it can get. And than even a lot more stupider.

So hardware synths is an acceptable technological development, but soft synths is not? You think the World started with soft synths already in existence after the Big Bang? Go bang some stick on rocks if this is your logic

Just place your hand randomly on the lower part and then quantise the result when you find something that sounds good. :bleh:
