curious question to windows user (mac guy here). Why is windows 8 the ugly stepchild? Is it not lighter than windows 10? And more compatible than win 7? I was going to set up a boot camp win 8 set up for audiogridder since Win 8 should be less bloated than 10.
So why is win 8 never mentioned as an option for audio?

  2. I say enable all Windows services together so that it hangs and use paper and pencil instead.

    01.png

All past composers have used paper and pencil. If they were to spend their time setting up a computer and its programs, their lives would end and they would never be able to create even a simple thing.

Windows 8 internally was fine. But the GUI was designed to be like a Windows Phone OS. I'm not joking here.
So it was a disaster of biblical proportions. Still I'd use it as a soft spot between 7 and 10, using a 3d party start menu (StartIsBack++).
But since almost nobody used/uses it due to that infamous GUI there's no support.

none of them interferes with working in user applications.

and in macos, doing the settings after you installed the OS takes 2 minutes because it is all in one window: go to spotlight, turn it off, go network, enter adress, go to timecapsule, turn it off, go to energy, set to 2 hours. 15 clicks later you make music.

in windows you sometimes have to click yourself several levels deep through various windows and you still havent found what you are looking for.
only changing the IP adress already requires 13 clicks and you end up diving 7 level deep and your whole screen is full with weird little windopws which all look the same. a chimpanzee would have organised that better.

if you are used to it and know it all, it is fine. but for a mac or linux user who uses windows the first time it is a nightmare

Settings and preferences under Windows are in general a nightmare as well as the graphic glitches in dark mode, inconcice file dialogs, how many do we have 3 ? 4 ? different ? I hope that Microsoft finally fix all these flaws starting with Sun Valley this year.

Mozart would of been on his grind pumping out 8-12 game changing beats a day on FL studio, to think that composers throughout history wouldn't utilize all tools available to them sounds like an excuse to me

I installed a windows 10 pro Lite Edition without SPYWARE from Microsoft but, what surprised me a lot is, it is working great and really very fast and, no tasks disturbing, no Cortana, no windows defender and all those spy software from Microsoft gone. I had to update very little a few drivers, I used a portable app called drive easy. If you are interested to have the link, just let me know, greetings to all.

I have to, I use Sequoia X Pro and Samplitude X Pro which are only made for windows, since I know these 2 applications, there is nothing else I wish to try in using for music production. greetings from Germany.

Something else, is it possible to setup a virtual private network between computers over the 'intenet' BUT that the computers dont have access to the "normal" internet ? Like a internal Enterprise VPN.
I a have a super paranoid friend which I like to collab , but he refuse to use windows. He always use a Linux Live CD to access the internet.
But that makes collaboration quite tedious :) any idea ?

Sure it can be done. Like you say companies and individuals do it all the time. I'm not sure what to recommend here since I use Linux for work.

    Oh, how I love it.

Maybe Win is not that easy to configure. Maybe. At least for those who don't know how.

But it's possible and not hard to learn.

Look at macOS. There they are called daemons. How much do you think are loaded and running in a clean new install? Does macOS have any onboard tool to configure them? ...

Use a virtual machine (VM). I'm specialized for VMware so I can only speak for VMware.

You could use a special network adapter just for the VM, the Host can use another one. Or maybe the Host uses LAN, VM uses WLAN or WWAN. Of course you can install a VPN in your VM or just for the Host.

Options are endless, setup is easy and fast.

In these times there will be nothing that does nothing.

Every OS runs more or less background tasks and "spyware".

The thing is: you know that and you take care of it. Or you don't know it and believe all the marketing hype that you'd own the only OS that doesn't spy you.

BTW: Look at technologies like Intel AMT. They don't even need an OS to look into your arse as deep the hole goes...

    +1, and use NTlite

    nobody said it is impossible.

the problem is that you have to "learn" it.

it would not be not neccessary to learn it first if it would be better organised: i dont want to become a operating system expert before i am able to change the ip adress of a mac. i find what i need going /preferences/network/ and then i am there.

my argument was that in windows you need 7 clicks to find the IP adress while on mac it is 3. your argumet is "but it is easy when you know it".

sure, when it would be 7145 clicks it would stll be easy if only you know it.

but see, i want to chance my ip adress, not become a windows os expert. and i want it in 5 seconds from now, not tomorrow.

the examples were already given in the form of the two most annoying things:

    autodefrag... never existed on mac.

so the only thing what you want to turn off in macos is the index search and the auto update, which both can be controlled by a controlpanel.

just like the story with the IP adress it is 3 clicks here vs 7 clicks there. plus it is language independent.

if you want to stop PPP or the window server, that indeed doesnt work with onboard tools. but who wants to do this? :)

(weird enough that indexing is on by default since macos 8.1 - if you ask me it should be opt-in)

    p.s.:

btw. in OSX you launch applications/utilities/process monitor app/ to monitor running processes.

it couldnt be easier. even if you use it for the first time, you will immediately be able to navif´gate manually at that place. or find it by search.

in windows 10, if you type "process" in the start menu, you will find no programs called like that.

at that moment i now have to ask another mac user how to find this in windows.

because if i ask a windows user he will either answer me "but that´s easy if you know it" or he doesnt know the difference between "process" and "processor".

    F***ing 316!

Everyone of them needs RAM, needs resources, needs more or less CPU. So optimizing a system is at first remove all the crap you do not need.

    E. g. why running touchbar support when I do not have a touchbar? Bluetooth, WLAN when I do not use it? Do I need a crash reporter running when I don't want to report my crashes I never have (right, yeah?)...

Yeah! The thing is: when a system doesn't defragment it's filesystem is it because it doesn't fragment files? "Never existed" are two great words. I remember MacOS 8/9, Norton Tools?

In theory NTFS should not fragment files, but in reality it does. So there is an option for defragmentation.

And - this is reality too - even an harddisks I never cared about fragmentation. There were only very few cases ~20 years ago when defragmentation leaded to a noticeable faster system.

    Nice! Thank you!

Anyway... looking at this you'll see if you want wo get rid of some starting daemons you have to do the following:

    launchctl unload -wF com.apple.spindump.plist
    launchctl unload -wF com.apple.metadata.mds.spindump.plist

VERY comfortable! What smartasses the people @Apple® are!!!
    Easy, fast and self explaining!

And look at the redmond m$-dumbasses:

These idiots made a control panel with a description, configuration options and information about dependencies. Confusing and irritating, annoying. Really, nobody wants something like this.
