Why do people judge others and care so much?

'Scuse the overly deep title

Anyway, with MOCHA's dump of the Dada Life stuff on the sister site today, it made me remember an incident some 10-15 years ago, and how it still happens.

I remember working with someone and they'd used Dada Life's Sausage Fattener on some project they had. Then someone else in the room at the time got all judgey about it, mocking them, saying it was a sure fire sign of amateur to use plugins like that, and basically ridiculed the person. This is despite the fact that the project they had actually sounded good, regardless of what plugins they used on it.

Then, today, on the forums and such I've seen similar judgey comments mocking Sausage Fattener again, which triggered my memory.

I've never used it personally, but just led me to wonder why do we care so much about what other people use and judge them for it?! Surely it's whether the output from the speakers sounds good or not is what counts, regardless of how the sound got there?!

Anyway, I think my 'deepness' exhausted for today, so carry on....

I know guys that would put Sausage Fattener on their master, and it sounded great. It seems like he is just judging the GUI.

If there wasn't a sausage on the UI then Mr. High Horse would have said nothing. He could have said the same about the NANI plugin.

I think it is fun that devs try to push the boundaries of plugin visuals, even if it may make it seem like a toy for children.
It is a fun gimmick. Sometimes it is ridiculous and a sore on the eyes.

Dunno really, if something works, it works, I used God Particle, Endless Smile, OTT, throw any other gimmick, I at least gave it a go and if it did anything, I used it, but most of them are like quick fix, it's like trying to have best kick drum and not wanting to dive deeper into synthesis, then spending few years just trying to find perfect sample or layer bunch of samples together, over process them, dunno, just dive in once in your life. Same with those plugins, you can go further, tailor that sound more to your liking, it's not rocket science, but if it's the ticket, who cares, if you can't go past them, you are crippling yourself with them.

Because it's easier to judge others than be accountable for your behavior.

For the record, I make fun of Sausage Fattener as much as anyone- it's freakin SAUSAGE FATTENER- but I genuinely love that plugin. For the right situation.

Honestly... I never tried it, because the graphics and the marketing copy make me gag, but really, I shouldn't give a fuck about that. If you know that it does X and Y, and something could do with X and Y, then it should be the right tool.

So yeah, perhaps I should try it instead of looking at the graphics... I guess the inherently silly nature of it has made it a meme, especially on some audio reddits and other forums.

The whole scene is an intricate network of tunnels and bolt-holes. Discerning what is real is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Yeah, there are plugins that have just reached meme state, but all in good fun. I mean, why on earth would anyone make a plugin called sausage fattener and put a sausage on the GUI if they didn't think it was funny or at least easier to make people talk about it? But as much as i make fun of these kind of plugins, playing down somebody for using them is just a whole new level of villainy not even i would engage on (and i have a mustache).

Two things then, really: elitism, and elitism-induced assholism.

"I must be better than you lowlife peasant, because I only use [EXPENSIVE BIG NAME] plugins!"

Pseudo-snob-elitism I call it. Happens in most activities and like has been said before is in the human nature unfortunately.
"I'm gonna pretend I'm better than you, specially in front of other people". If I don't have a point I'll make it up saying something that has good rep is much better than the crap you use".

In this case the on-purpose silly name and GUI makes it an even easier target.

This one developer's plugins have funny graphics and a few silly names. But Dada Life is an extreme example of it. Sometimes I will refer to something as amateurish when it is about something like way too much reverb, or over-compression of sounds that didn't even need compression; because they are easy Hallmark beginner mistakes to make. When someone singles out one devs plugins that you are using, it's not something other than trying to establish some pecking order in their mind, or saying you haven't been doing music as long, or haven't sold enough records, or whatever. But those kinds of comments are generally directed to the other person, and not the plugin or the developer. It's really a form of gaslighting. The person making the comment is making BS comments predicated on the fact they even know what they are talking about. They usually do not even realize they are doing it, but they most certainly are. A large portion of the time it's a transparent attempt at trolling. What you do about it is your prerogative.

People can be small-minded and petty. Most of this stuff is like chapter 3 of the book Trolling for Dummies. This forum has some very good ignore features.

People are often drawn to what they know and are comfortable with, and it's mostly mainstream. People have a natural tendency to favor the group they identify with, which includes brands and celebrities. Judging others can also simply be a way to feel better about oneself. It is based on a lack of knowledge, experience, or understanding too, which leads to assumptions and stereotypes. Negative past experiences with things outside the mainstream might lead to biased judgments about things that seem similar.

I think some of that comes from insecure people who feel the need to be superior over someone else for once.
