Why did you choose music?

Friday night, drinking beer, working on a song doing final arrangements and my laptop on the side with AS opened as usual and having some thoughst about certain things.
Read an article about old people who are dying and their regrets. The number one regret is not pursuing your dreams, your goals and selling yourself out because you are afraid of what others might think of you.
Lets face it, as artists, musicians we are different, We chose music because we want to communicate on a wider level, because it gives you a sense that there is more to life than what we see.
I think if you are reading this that you`ve already made big desicions, takes balls to pursue your dreams and goals, even if its just a hobby.
I salute you all, serious or weekend musicians, standing up for yourself, your goals, your desire, makes you a true warrior.
Tell us more, why you chose music, why you want to learn or play an instrument, produce, compose?
No matter what happens in life, we will be able to look back. at the fun times we have had on this forum.
Love and respect to you all.

My mother left me when i was 4.
And so, music was a kind of "mother figure" for me,
because i can feel love in music.
(hope that makes sense, sry for my english)

Initially it was a science of breaking down the tunes that first gave me that burst of serotonin, studying and testing different strands and variations of music to recreate that effect that made my head tingle. It then evolved from there, and then became a gift of giving the strand that makes my hairs raise to other people. Kind of like a drug dealer getting high off music and then fiending for another hit in anyway possible, making diy meth in a bag or something :P. Then it kind of became a gateway drug to other genres once i got bored of that first hit, and then you consume more and more varieties of music to keep getting hits and of more complexity.

After that initial stage for me it then became about legacy, considering how short my time is on this planet, i want my ideas/personality to emininate for longer than i live. The influence of art in an amazing gift we can give to people. If my art draws emotion/inspiration and my name is attached to that, then my name/ideas live on long after i pass.

maybe, who knows. in the early days i really wanted to "make it" in the music business,
but haven´t found musicians with the same "attitude". today i think: i´m glad i don´t have to make music just because i must, to get money for living.
it is pure luxury for me, making music just for me ( the good old "therapy form", you know), and my band.
have a job with sense (social carer for older peoples), giving music-lessons in git, drums, vocs, piano,
that´s the way i do it today. BUT i never will give up my dream!!! i´m still working to get better and better, and who knows, maybe someday
i have my ALBUM, i mean THE ALBUM (it´s in my fucking brain!) with songs i havent written yet.

You know when people say "this music reminds me of ...(this or that event)", or when people like to listen to music while studying or working? Well, for me it's always been the other way round, the music grabs my attention and I can't do anything else while listening to it. Eventually, it took over. I dropped out of engineering school and have been working with music ever since.

I used to do so many drugs, it's a wonder (by grace) I'm not dead or in a vegetative state. Besides good, pure, old-fashioned love, music is the only thing that brings my being to those places drugs did and then takes me even further. I say further because I don't crash into depression (music actually lifts me out), it doesn't destroy my body (I guarantee the right tune at the right time has the power to heal) and whatever cravings I have only serve to make me a better person as I just compose something, simple or not and it's insanely fulfilling or I expose my self to new music and hearing that new track can be so indescribably enlightening.
I'm sure you guys know by now how I'm always going on about spirit and soul and the "mystical" nature of the human condition. I truly believe that science, as complicated as it can be, is the most base understanding of nature. The very basic outline of how things are ordered in creation. Awesome and moving music, while structured in science and math, is absolute proof that there is some much beyond the tangible and like many of you, I could/will spend my whole life bringing myself and others to that place. Even if it only ever happened once in my lifetime, to me it would not be a wasted life.

Or it just sounds right and makes us want to move our bodies.

growing up, i was always into art of any kind, but i didn't see music as art (strange to say that now, but i wasn't even 10 then), just something to enjoy listening to, and i loved listening to music. i would leave the radio on whenever i was home.

i got bullied in public school, but wouldn't tell my mom, but i think she could tell. all i remember is for some reason, the next school year, i was enrolled in a catholic private school...which turned out to be one of the top performing arts schools in the city! while there, i learned that music IS art, just with a different tool to express yourself. i was able to take up singing, piano, sax, and drums, learn music theory and perform twice a year for school concerts.

long story short, i became an instant addict.

i don't know if it chose me or not, but it has yet to fail me, so i think we chose each other in some way.

I don't remember when or why I chose it. I was always asking my parents to buy me records before I even started kindergarten. I've just always loved music for as long as I can remember.

I used to spend days searching for just the right music to use in sound design for radio, Television and film, never finding the precise material to express the landscapes of my imagination.

As I kid, I had a rudimentary education in music. I was a singer and (Lord help me) a little choirboy. Nonetheless, my major focus was science.

The school curriculum didn't cater for simultaneous education in music and science; thus, I was pushed into science because I was extraordinarily good at that but merely average with music. However, in spite of great pressure from academics and parents to become a full blown scientist, I chose to enter the world of theater as a lighting and sound guy. From there, I got picked up by the broadcast industry. I dropped studies in light design and focused purely on audio for music and drama productions, becoming the "go to guy" for those jobs. One day, I decided "Fuck it. I lose so much time looking for other people's music. Why not simply bite the f***ing bullet and deeply study the craft of making music?" So, I did.

And I still do that, every single day. Yeah. I know. I need to get out more.

The advantages for me became twofold. I could converse with musicians and more effectively support them in sessions by understanding their language. Also, I was permitted to write and record my own musical scenarios for use in production. For the employer, it was a really good deal. They got work done quickly and cost-effectively and they also get use of all of my own music, absolutely, and free of charge, for ever, under the "Staff No Fee" clause.

Today, I'm part pro tech., part amateur muso, and a full pro Producer/Director. I believe that I never would have made it thus far without being involved in the music scene. Music gave me the edge. Music gave me a creative freedom that I crave so badly that nothing else matters to me.

I didn't choose music. The music was always there, imprisoned inside of me. I just needed a way to let it out.

All right. It sounds great - but it came at a cost. Perhaps too steep a cost. I'm no longer capable of perceiving music and sound as a natural phenomenon. For me, it's product. One could say that I played the Devil's game and lost. But who doesn't?

We don't choose music. Music chooses us. The true artists anyways...

I have to make stuff otherwise I get bent out of shape. More so than usual.
