.nfos often include vital information on how to activate and use the software, just saying. Not every plugin activation process is straightforward. They're meant for people to be read and to be kept with the software.

Errr.. make that 3 decades or so hehehe.
I don't condone re-packing for the most part. Sometimes it can help though (R4E Kontakt 6 for instance).
But rls in rars is scene rules. Scene releases must always be in a spanned compressed manner, usually that is multiple rars.
One reason that this practice still stands strong, is data integrity. Imagine dling a 25gb iso only to find your dl is corrupt. With the rls being in multi-rar you can have your sfv check and if a rar is broken you can always dl it again or even repair it with much less fuss without having to re-download the whole package.
Another reason is authenticity check, fake releases produce different checksum(s).
Also, for the younger peeps, in the older days, it was really hard sharing large chunks of data. Breaking an iso to multiple rars made it much easier to spread the rls. Even today, sample libs can be enormous. SD3 is 230gb not to mention that is the factory library alone.
Trust me, you wouldn't want sizeable libraries to be a single iso when you dl them.
PS: I wouldn't question the rules unless i had something innovative in my mind to propose. They ensure releases have a persistent data quality. The rules will also help distinguish a scene release from an "amateur" release, with everything good or bad that includes.
    Cheers :)

If i said i didn't laugh i'd be lying. But hey.
Fitgirl is next gen re-packer. I 've watched her text posts, it's rare to find someone with a passion for compressing data and how it can be perfected. Back in the day, re-packers usually were called out as the vultures of the scene by the scene groups because they would alter the original rls. In the recent years though, data got huge, re-packers became many and groups tolerate them for the most part. Well... at least the "good" ones.
So, Fitgirl may not be accepted as a scener but what she's doing is important for a lot of people.
In our case it's harder, audio is not very good for compression. The best we 've come up in (free) lossless algos so far is flac and it's not perfect either.
The one thing not to forget is, scene rules are "universal" to all groups. Whether they release movies, games or audioapps, the rules are the same with some extras for specific types of data.
    Cheers

I can't find a good example about file in small size divided to even smaller pieces. So you're probably right that it was more frequent practice years ago.
But I can give you examples where the final downloadable file is just one rar or zip but inside it there are small parts:
Look at MakeMusic Finale releases like the 25.5 update for mac. Or look at Fabfilter Total Bundle releases.
The causes must be to protect the file from being detected and removed from the hoster site.

I don't mind downloading multiple parts, nowadays it won't cause me insomnia. There are several download managers to choose.
For years I've used DownThemAll in Firefox, and since it got broken with newer FF updates, I'm currently using Free Download Manager, it's less complex but still useful.
And sometimes it's better to have it in more parts when one downloading process doesn't come on your max bandwidth.
What is annoying is the multiple (more than one) re-repacks, especially with huge (tens of GBs) releases.
