here's my tutorial to write symphonies

analyze, transcribe for piano and learn to play:
    -50/60 Hayden symphonies
    -all 41 Mozart's symphonies
    -all 9 Beethoven's
-2 by Tchaj, 2 by Schubert, 2 by Brahms
-1 by Mahler, 1 by Bruckner, 1 Brandeburg Concerto by Bach

after that, if you are fast, see you in 6 years for the second part of the tutorial

(third part in 2032) and thats all

if you dont like the plan keep looking on youtube for the "secret sauce" in a 20 minutes video...

We have two types of engineering.
    • Direct engineering
    • Reverse engineering

The people you mentioned have learned music directly. All these people have great masters who taught many things to these people.

Unfortunately, most prominent music professors are gathered in American universities and a few European countries, and only they know what is what. These people only teach these things to their own students and that too in exchange for receiving tuition fees and big money.
Making a symphony is like making a rocket, the knowledge of which is not available to everyone. Those people who know these things are not willing to post these things on the internet. If reverse engineering worked in the field of music, everyone would be Beethoven by now. Reverse engineering is useful for people who do not have access to anything and have to experience everything themselves from scratch. As you know, reverse engineering usually leads to failure. Because there is so much complexity in a product that reverse engineering takes several years to learn and make an already made product, it will probably not succeed.
I don't want much. I just want the trainers to teach the entire process of building big things. Only then can you become a creator. If elementary things are to be taught in a hundred years, no one will enter the higher stages of learning and thinking.

Those who know do not teach others.

Only low-level education is taught to people so that they don't know what is what for the rest of their lives.

Why do we learn something at all? To do it ourselves.
When you don't learn something, you definitely can't reflect it in your work. Doing something depends on learning it beforehand.
If you are not taught how to build and manage big things, you will never become a creator of that thing. Lack of training leads people to reverse engineering. Reverse engineering fails 99% of the time. Even in that 1% , it is not known what your product will be and how it will work.

Be sure that if it's taught how to make big and great things, many people will be motivated to learn it and use it in their works. But when people are denied and deprived of such education, they will satisfied with small things. That too out of necessity.

I was being facetious. Of course they do. BUT, they only teach people already on a level that they will benefit from it, and they usually charge a lot. They don't have YouTube channels.

Who did teach Haydn and Mozart to compose symphonies?

How did they become creators? By reverse engineering? Or by direct one? As I understand they were the authors of the symphony (as a genre) in the modern sense of this word. May be it's not completely true but it make sense. What we call symphonies didn't exist before them.

There are many things somebody can teach you. But there are thing nobody can teach you.

Afaik, Hayden pretty much innovated the symphony as we know it. Then he taught it to Beethoven. Mozart just glommed onto it

Yes, I've meant strictly this. When Haydn created the modern symphomy (as a special musical form with four parts instead of three ones etc.) who did teach him to do it?

And who did teach his predecessors? The symphony existed in the Baroque but not earlier.

Because once you're past the beginners part, if you can't get pro on your own, find a new thing to do, then what you signed up for is not for you. Pro's don't need tutorials. If you need a tutorial, then you're not past the beginner part yet.

ok. Tell me a couple of things (you can even lie, nobody knows you here)

-how many symphonies do you know? by "you know" I mean you can follow it note by note almost singing, quote bars on piano, and obviously sum up the formal structure
-how many pieces of pure music lasting from 30 to 80 minutes have you heard and how many times in your life? "pure music" I mean music in concerto, not theatre opera or musical or movies.

this will tell how to go on in the discussion

no actually, most people are taught not to think, but to beleive. Once you no longer trust your thinking abilities its very easy to make you beleive anything.

If you want to learn music, learn how to play an instrument, the piano is the easiest, but rather large and needs tuned frequently. a midi keyboard with a piano sample patch is the best thing in the current market price wise and learning wise. A stringed instrument is also a good learning tool, but more difficult learning curve as you have to learn how stretch your hand and hand strength has to be increased before you can do much, many give up before they ever get their hands under their control.

Once you learn piano you will have the basics to understand notes, and rests and chords and progressions. Then you write a melody or a chord progression. Then you write a matching or counterpoint for your bass hand (the left one). voila, the bass hand can be turned into a string piece for viola etc. now you are ready to learn how to write for a stringed instrument.

now that you know a bit, hang out with some horn players and learn about the woodwinds and the brass, and their limits regarding note length, finger patterns, etc.

Learn drums, it takes a lot of understanding to write for mulitple instruments. you don't have to be a virtuso on each instrument, just learn enough to understand the instruments and the players.

but start somewhere, don't sit and bitch because nobody will hold your hand and show you every step. Only you can learn, and if you give it a try, you might find that you can also teach (yourself)

write short peices for different instruments. nobody writes a symphony right off the bat. you work up to it by writing pieces for a single instrument, then duos, etc.

There is a plethora of text books available on the internet that explain every aspect of music and composition. books that would cost you thousands to tens of thousands, do your self a favor and crack open a couple of those and start reading them.
you won't understand most of it, especially if you don't play an instrument. so play that midi keyboard, and keep rereading those books and eventually it will make sense and the next book will be easier, etc,etc.etc.

    wait wait wait
isnt this thread looking for "tutorials to make BIG THINGS?"

or I got stupid or some trolling is going on here, not you Garamondo obv

but: "piano is the easiest instrument"? DAMN. For genius maybe, I am still struggling even if I play since I was 8yo

also: our friend needs a tutorial to "write symphonies", I assume he plays piano
Also...if someone is looking for a tutoriale to write a symphony should know notes and rests...

otherwise what the hell are we talking about here?

You mean just the 12 notes of the keyboard octave, don't you?
Because you never stop to learn piano, there is not a limit, like in painting, just targets you impose yourself, like "I want to be a good pianist like A. B. Michelangeli" (good luck!), but then there could be higher and higher targets.

this poor guy can't even figure out how to learn how to learn, give him a break. If he finds out that learning is infinite, he'll probably crawl back into his sleeping bag and go catatonic on us.

Piano is easiest, in that the entire octaves are laid out literally in black and white, you only need to learn with one hand when you start. so you can use your dominant hand, unlike guitar. Piano is easiest because the note relationships are obvious and you can literally see how a triad is formed, a 7th, a 9th etc

Piano is much easier, than Tuba, Trumpet, Violin, guitar

even easier than piano, drums if you have the stamina and rythm and don't mind destroying your ears.
The Bells or recorder are even easier, but pretty much useless for understanding music theory and composition other than Yankee Doodle or twinkle twinkle little star.

so yeah Piano is the easiest practical instrument for learning music (not just learning piano) Yeah it may take a lifetime to become a master, but you don't have to be a master to understand the piano and the underlying music theory. I play shitty piano, but I still enjoy it and love playing it. I play guitar much better, but I still enjoy playing piano, one doesn't exclude the other.

The OP asked for a tutorial on creating a symphony from zero to 100, zero means you aren't even sure how to open a piano. so that would mean zero musical skill, knowledge or understanding. hence my post regarding where the road begins.

Yes one would assume if you wanted to write a symphony, you would know about notes, chords etc. but this is the internet and the price of admission is literally having a smartphone your grandma gave you for your birthday so my expectations of others is rather low these days..
