to read audio files I've used foobar for years now and dont plan to change, as it reads it all and does about everything I need,
...also I like the simple way it uses to manage user's library... cuz as I have a massive collection most of the other
software just crash whenever they try to handle it

but when it comes to video, I often encounter problems ...miss that codec, jerky playback or whatever...I've use VLC, GOM, classic media player, Windows MP etc...
but i'd like to find one free read-it-all-out-of-the-box soft....is there one out there? what do you use?

    thanks for your input

I tend to use VLC for pretty much everything, except for actually organizing my music collection, I use iTunes for that.

No I have never really had any problem with VLC, except for wav files that did not extract properly, but that has always turned out to be an issue with the file and not VLC, at least as far as I can tell... but I don't really get into a bunch of obscure file types so not sure, but from everything I've ever read VLC blows the doors off every other media player as far as handling of file types goes

    VLC

Its fast to open, handles almost anything and its light on resources (compared to iTunes).

J.River Media Center  (former Media Jukebox)

    http://www.jriver.com/

I have used that now for around 10 years.
I have tried many programs, but no one can beat Media Center, when it comes to organizing a huge music collection.
Lots of possibilites, supports all formats you can imagine. You can also use it with your iPod, instead of that shitty iTunes (at least for Windows computers that's surely huge crap).
And still it is very fast, responsive and leightweight on your system.
    Great, great program.

It can play all kinds of video files as well, but I use it only for music, I somehow like to use different players for audio and video.

Right now I use version 15, cracks are available.

it's not about the player, it's about codecs + ffdshow pack.
if you setup your codecs correctly, everything will work just fine

but i have the lastest codec packs (both 32 v7.2 and 64 bits v4.7) so ....it must be something else ...before just by using the default (recommended) settings everything worked fine but now...it not always the case

that's what i used before switching to foobar a while ago...Media Jukebox was indeed REALLY great for people with a massive collection (talking Tb here) and i found the abilty to generate play-lists of random songs from the whole collection really cool ...it was a bit long when indexing though but much faster than any other whatsoever...i'll check that new revamped version out *yes*
