Which one do you prefer?

  1. Although, a great preamp will bring out qualities of say, an SM58 that would perhaps never be revealed with the signal pumping through the board at your local open mic night coffee shop. Bono supposedly has used one to record whole albums because that is what he is used to hearing in his head (just hearsay, I have never been in a studio when he was cutting vocals). I used to use an old AKG p 12-48 as my vocal mic running through a Joe Meek VC1 which was just stellar. When I needed to sell the preamp and had to run through the pres in the Mackie 32-4 all the light was literally sucked out of it, turning a 3D sounding mono mic that was bright but with sweet sweet highs into a flat grey dead or decaying landscape. It was like a reverse Wizard of Oz, the color being switched out after the novel and wonderful color. It was fairly traumatic for me.
