Well you know, in this overpopulated world the music data grows expontentially every year, and now they're not just human creations but AI's too. So keeping updated with the current zeitgeist or state of art of things, which for many people its a fundamental part of creative endevours, it's getting more difficult every day.

I had my beacon of light, a critic named Piero Scaruffi (https://scaruffi.com/, maybe some people here know him too), who's knowledge help to know many fundamentals till 2010's, but now he isn't reviewing as fast as he used to, and a think that this has led me to a kind of existential crisis (see: https://audiosex.pro/threads/i-think-that-im-becoming-a-pop-junkie-help.78503/).

No, it is not that bad haha, but I wanna fight back at this sea of information, I think that in the 2024 I lost against it, and got mostly what was at the top of the sea, the tunes that the music industry offered with all it's media and hollywood like parafernalia, and the albums that metacritic recommended (which are not much different from the ones of the music industry).

So, which are your sources of new music? How do you surf this sea of information? Do you have any critic that you trust? I guess that there are communities just for listening and sharing music can you reccomend any? Maybe some have an unorthodox way for finding new artists that would like to share? Anything would be great

If someone I know personally who's taste I like tells me to check something out I do. Otherwise, I avoid music.

RateYourMusic is my favorite source for underground but high quality albums. If it's just pop music/trending, any streaming service will deliver it to you on the radios/playlists of the genre.

Genre-specific subreddits. Right now is an especially good time to troll those posts since everyone is posting their best-of-2024 playlists.

To be honest, the best time when there was really something new for me has been over for years. For me the quality has rather gone down and if you listen to the charts there is nothing there for me. I only listen to old music and because there is so much out there I don't have any need for more music. I also make music myself and listen to my own music.

I used to read fanzines, music magazines and record label catalogs and I had some interesting radio stations that also featured new bands and then I went to my record store and bought the records.

For fun, I looked up the term Italo Disco and 80s pop music on Wikipedia and all the bands are listed there, so I didn't miss a single good band.

Funnily enough, I have found not much has changed for me for finding new sources since before the Internet radio became huge. The only thing that has changed is the number of radio stations globally.
Find the style/genre you like, find a handful of online radio stations that play what you like and the unique ones that play new unheard music. Streaming YouTube and other publicity-oriented recommendations I completely avoid.

DJ Mixes on youtube, Soundcloud or mixed by friends. But Youtube works quite good to find new stuff. I dislike to listen to playlists where songs just play after each other with gaps.
