It doesn't stop working after a year of use, you just wont get anything new added to your version, exactly the same as you dont get anything new with cubase etc when they bring out a new version.

You can't just compare Bitwig - a super new player, which promised so many things and keeps pushing them - with Steinberg Cubase - a sophisticated DAW in the high-end prosumer area, which has an odd update increment system.
Bitwigs new licensing model let's the buyer just invest in something, which they don't have a clue what will come and what not. Cubase simply fixes, renews and adds new stuff every 0.5 increment.
    The difference is simple:
Cubase offers updates in smaller increments than any other DAWs, but you get a proper 7,5 or a 8,5 or a 9.0 which are tied to a special amount of features. Bitwig just let's you "invest" in their software, but you don't have a simple clue whats coming. In a way it's making 1st class and 2nd class costumers, so I wouldn't buy any of these two.

i m not sure if bitwig has a sub model meaning how to pay every year.
i thing you just a buy the current version and have free updates for a year.
    just like that.
of course features at the current moment are just basic so in my opinion they shouldnt ask for 379 euros yet because other daw's like cubase has more to offer for almost the same price
if bitwig cost 200 dollars nobody would blame them.
and they could raise the price later at version 3 or 4 so everyone would be happy.

    U r right.

In many stores u can get cubase in very low price.

Maybe we will open here Audio sex pro academy and we could buy the edu version.

So who sign on the papers...?

They charge 379 euros for Bitwig Studio, Seriously? That is getting towards encroaching on RML's SAWStudio uniquely audacious and tragically amusing price that's just somehow remained the same over a decade. I mean quite frankly I sincerely doubt that one will never be topped for way over priced and utterly shit, If anyone has ever had the erm "pleasure" then you'll know how uniquely "special" it is truly.

Now I am not saying that Bitwig Studio is utterly shit but that asking price is a bit of a shocker, Way too much IMextremelyhumbleO.
Half what they are charging and then it sounds about reasonable/fair.

That'll keep me far away from even trying it. I'm totally CIS dawmative after seeing them asking that many shekels!

I am from the "trackers" era on the amiga, switched to cubase, reason, fl studio, ableton live, studio one, until i read about Bitwig when it was not out yet. For the first time after Cubase i bought a license again for a DAW, simply because Bitwig has the fastest workflow, the most intuitive features and the ability to use 32 and 64 bit plugins simultaneously and sandboxed. The difference with Live first of all is the gui, it is more colourful and clear then Ableton live. Second of all ableton live was only able to play clips or arrangement and not both the same time, like Bitwig does. If you have an arrangement, you can mix a clip within it. Also the build in plugins are very underestimated in Bitwig. The reverb is one of the best i ever heard, and i have a lot of reverbs. The audio- and Stepmod are the most creative plugins i have ever seen, it is like the ultimate sidechain, and in 2.0 it is even better. After these years i am still amazed by Bitwig, although i am also not very pleased with their expensive license updates, but for me it is no argue of the quality of Bitwig, only i hope there will be more major updates then before. Don't get me wrong, because i also find live and studio one and cubase fantastic daw's, but Bitwig is still the best choice for me.

Something that i forgot to tell is that i m having almost the same problem with cpu usage like studio one.
anyone else has the same problem ?
does the cpu usage of this daw cause wierd sounds ?
reaper and cubase run very good on my old computer but bitwig has an issue with cpu here on my pc.

Yes, mostly when there are no plugins loaded... as soon as I put a reverb plugin on any channel (even an empty one), the strange sounds disappear.
I had also problems changing the sample rate.

The subscription argument is null because it doesn't have a subscription model. It's just a yearly upgrade and you get patches and updates for 12 months until the "next" upgrade. I don't quite see how this is different to Cubase releasing a step or x.5 half step version on the first Wednesday of every December, after which you will not likely get an update for the previous version (unless there is still a MAJOR bug - which Bitwig would equal I'm sure if it had a MAJOR outstanding bug). I think the people who rant about this are probably people who just don't understand it, or use Ableton or Logic, which they whinge about only being updated every few year, so devs can't win either way!

And with regard to subscription, it's not a rip off. With most you can choose to buy outright or subscribe, such as Sonar. It's a choice. Your choice. And the more choices the better. East West's subscription made their hugely expensive sample libraries accessible to people like me, as did Serum's rent-to-buy type of subscription. Yes, they have issues, such as East West's not giving you ownership so you're screwed after you stop your subscription but there are workarounds like subscribing for one month at the time you want access or bouncing the tracks to audio once finalised and you are about to end your subscription. This is still a good thing for me as buying the products would have cost me thousands that I don't have, whereas this enables me to access premium libraries.

Subscription products have their place and I think it is ultimately a good thing as it gives us, the consumers, more choices and ways to access previously unaffordable products. If you don't agree, choose to buy outright or not to buy at all. That's your choice. Whining about it for the sake of whining is slightly moronic as it takes up nobody's time but yours for no gain!

Just my tuppence worth on the slightly off-topic debate in this thread....

I am ok with the model but not with the price, and since the devs are quite slow with major updates it is likely there will not be a worthy update anymore till next year. Will the upgrade price remain the same if i upgrade only when version 3 will be released?

It's clear where Bitwig is now. BS2 is out and v1.3.16 could be the last BS1 release.

What really matter, for me, is where they will be on February 2018. Meanwhile the right
move is to have/take a sit and wait for their next decisions.

I may not be the most "professional" or "serious" music-maker, but I like the version 1.x of Bitwig a lot. The GUI is really welcoming, and there is a surprising amount of detail provided toward musicality, particularly in the automation controls, and the instant beat-matching of dropped-in audio is great. However, the "subscription" business model is going to kill a good DAW. No one likes feeling as though they're on a leash.

Bitwig acts on me very developed by young intelligent people and I feel their self-esteem. It is very thoughtful. I can really hear the superior delay compensation compared to another known DAW.

I have tried several times to install and look at this DAW. Never had any success. Not that I really care. I am pretty happy with what I have been using, but I am always open to checking out different things. I think I have tried maybe 3 times, and it never worked. I have never even seen the interface.

No you can't. The only time you could hear delay compensation would be when it doesn't work and everything goes out of sync. But when it's working, stuff just happens as it should.

I'm guessing that the "other DAW" you speak of is Ableton, who fixed their automation delay compensation over a year ago.

No the other DAW is FL Studio. Maybe you are right. But i put two samples, one bass-synth and a closed / percussion-loop in Bitwig and FL Studio with same presets.

The result is that what i "feel to hear" since i work with bitwig. - In this test, The looped arrangement sounded more synchronous and faster but the BPM was the same as in FL Studio.

PS: probably t has to do with what you can read often: "The delay compensation in FL Studio is not good".

Is it really that? I find it hard to believe that after a year they would dare to shut you out from bugfixes, that would not only be outrageous, that would just be fraud. Updates, yes, but bugfixes?
