I'm certainly not going to close a post just because the topic is not of your liking.
I already explain several times my position about that. This website is big enough for you to ignore threads that you dont like.

If you look at this list you would see that all great composers have had great teachers (knowing theory) or studied the theory deeply by themselves.

List of music students by teacher

Imagine how their music would sound if they didn't know the theory of their times.:dunno:

Probably they did, but listening was magnitudes more important than corrections in the process.

I believe what you're talking about is pattern recognition. That's a mental process. Music theory in my book is about writing essays about that kind of patterns and exchanging thoughts about that patterns. But knowing some theory is not a prerequisite to recognise them.
    (Linguist vs. poet.)

I don't believe theories are made to be used, they're made to describe. Though a grammar book may help with some details when you're trying to learn a foreign language, but you learn by listening, talking, reading, writing in that language.
So you don't use theory, but you often do things in a way that have been described by it.

Imho there's a lot of hype going on about music theory. Understandable, if today someone can throw together some loops, but feels something is missing. It's getting sold as a kind of holy grail, while the basics are actually quite simple. The advanced stuff may be of interest for musicologists and very advanced players. And please don't assume I don't know what I'm talking about, because I'm too lazy to learn.:winker:

A view that could only be spoken by someone that does not know even what music theory is .
( But who has every right to feel that way and think that way and nobody needs to change your mind unless you do naturally on your own )

in my case music theory has shown to keep tight relation to so many levels of my own personal development. im sure its the case with other people.

i have internalize segments of it when i mature other aspects of my own life.

now, im not a super advanced theoretical musician, it has taken me maaany years to come to the point but i finally "know what i dont know", meaning that i know how to acquire a specific part of theory that i need in a specific situation to get the job done.

but i finally have a view a comprehension of the different aspects that involve music theory, so im a happy camper. now its just a journey that will never end, and in that journey lies the whole joy :)

definitely, but i also know people for who its a real pita though. if you have short attention span or similar issues it can be a nightmare, but everyone only wins of studying theory, from the most basic to the more advanced parts of it. well, that is something that can be said of all knowledge really, it doesn't matter of what field really...

Yes theory is an asset, to be learned.
Simply said, with theory you can be quite uninspired but you'll still be able to get somethings out, digging into that wealth of knowledge.
If you don't have theory you can be be highly inspired, hear the freaking tune in your head, and yet be unable to spit it out.
So pick your poison. If you're in the business of making music, the choice is easy.

ive seen many people who actually lose a lot when they start studying theory, they suddenly lose all they had achieved by ear, its like they get inhibited when starting the journey and not already know everything, it calms down after a while thought it seems

It's because the music theory of that you learn in the beginning can give the wrong impression of music theory . Once you get to the advanced music theory you can see it for the truth for what it actually is .
This is because music is so complex you have to start out learning that way and build upon it .
In the beginning you have to learn the rough outline line drawing version to overtime fill in the fine detail .( By the advanced level you relize it's about pattern recognition in the brain grouping similar things.
It's the equivilent of science of music .
( The way music itself actually works in reality )
It's how every song that will ever be written works .

Yep it confused me first, instinct was invited to be put on hold, so that conscious creation could come in. Probably a tendency to over-intellectualize stuff in general, music was a field I did not do that. When you have a way of doing things it's not easy to change. But there is much to gain by fusing those two together.
