Not sure what are you trying to discuss or say, that complexity doesn't necessarily mean beauty? In that case... well, duh. Or is your stand that complicated music can't be beautiful? Then... what???

Also, what the composer and listener experience when it comes to either difficulty or complexity is not the same.

I don't know why, but often you make me feel like I am part of a Turing test. : )

my first thought is Jazz from Hell by Frank Zappa..
or maybe some Squarepusher? or Venetian Snares...?
complexity does not necessarily make the music good as such?

  4. I alluded to the same perhaps about a year ago. I think that we should finally demand truth to his assertion of humanity.

The exact opposite. All these threads are for the self-contentment and making music relaxedly for all people. Thinking about the complexity as the Classical and Jazz adherents do all the time is stressful, for anyone. IMHO, complication is an enemy for any person who wants to live and make music freely and in peace.:guru:

Why the complexity must not allow to make such beautiful music? Only a free mind can make it. :dunno:

    A free mind, you say...

If you want to build a modern house that you can live in you can skip the knowledge and theory part and be free in your mind. Chances are that you will be trapped in a primitive little house looking out screaming that everyone else trapped in complexity. Not many are willing to visit such a house for very long. Surely noone will pay good money to buy it.

Edit: The song you posted is not a simple song free of theory or tradition.

The "complication" here is a mix of: great performance, feeling and musical genius…

…and if you need more "complications":

You know why the brain can't bud? This was a good story a long time ago but has been flogged to its death now.

Don't know why people relate the complication to this thing?:dunno:

No way! You can play the notes with any instrument. Today by accessing to any sound, using only the notes brings the complication not the instruments themselves.
It's so simple and free of any theory and who cares about the tradition!

Interesting thread, thanks @foster911 and everyone else.

I'd say Steve Reich's "Violin Phase" is pretty complicated to say the least. It was originally composed by making identical tape loops and then hitting play at the same time, the slight timing differences makes for an evolving rhythmic meditation. You start to hear the rythms in different ways after a while too because your brain will not be able to keep up, so you just surrender to the piece and get drawn on to it.

Now that it is possible to play this live as seen in this video is beyond me. Everybody starts at the same time but then they have to drift without being distracted by the other players. I have no more words, listen.

bach, very complicated intricate chromatic theme. it' ONE TYPE of complicated. but i would say the most complicated, because you have to be a mathmatical genius AND artistic. Not very common, other than that. Frank Zappa's music - the complexity can be demonstrated by the type of musician that was required to play it.

other than that. i would say the hardest thing to do in music, is to be successful. It takes a rare combination of social skill, business savvy, talent, lots of practice, and that is all just the beginning. Anyone making good money at music is lucky, talented or both.
