    Best Answer
Digital Suburban - Dexed - FM Plugin VSTi - Freeware
Dexed is a FM synth closely modeled on the Yamaha DX7.

The irony of this one, is that while FM8 became very popular; it's very popular with many people who would never want to deal with programming an original DX. So recommending a great DX clone is actually the last thing you might want to do.

in the algorithm section which are the modulators and which the carriers?

first line for example is Carries i assume?

then 2nd/3rd/4th line above them is the modulators?

Most of the sounds that I actually associate with what FM8 is often used to make in current music; if you were to ask me "what else can I make this with?" I would probably choose the Phase Distortion approach almost every time. Most of the time I see FM8 even get used in tutorial videos, the person covering the material doesn't fully grasp FM synthesis; never mind recommending it to another beginner-intermediate other user. It can be a (possibly worthwhile) rabbit hole. My personal last answer would be "I know, let's get out the DX7 for this one". Phaseplant, Alchemy? Virus DSP56300? Nah, I got allll day for this one sound."...

Does the accuracy of an emulation matter, if the entire intent is to abuse the original source anyway? Did the Oil Drum baseball bat guy in Slipknot care if they bought the barrel at Home Depot....perhaps, being the professional musician that he is. :)

    GUIDES
Learning the basics of FM synthesis and how it works

Despite subtractive being the dominant form of synthesis, FM remains one of the best and most distinctive-sounding alternatives.
So it’s worth taking the time to understand it; if you’ve got a lab coat, now’s the time to pop it on!

You should probably pick one synth for now and stick with it until you absolutely know all the ins and outs and can be 100% sure that what you are trying to achieve cannot be done in the synth of your choice.

Since we don't know what you are going for and you aren't sure what functionality makes the sound what it is, we can only guess that FM8, dexed and Vital are all equal choices :dunno:

is the screen i have in vital 1 carrier 3 oscillator thats how its set up or how can i set it up to be correct

I mean, the picture is nice, but I can't hear the sound you're looking for.

E: That reminds me. Is this close enough to the sound you were trying to recreate in the deleted thread?

I deleted vital awhile ago, but it should be the same as serum even. the frequency modulation of the carrier, is being done using the next oscillator in each of your examples. as it's modulator. the modulator is the one you do not hear.

Keep in mind that Thor and Vital are not real FM synthesizers

VITAL : FM Tutorial And Tips

    Vital
    - Vital ist ein Wavetable Synth Plugin

    Thor
    - Where other synths use one specific form of synthesis and one single filter, the Thor
polysonic synthesizer features six different oscillator types and four unique filters.
    Source: www.reasonstudios.com/de/reason/instruments/thor

FM in Thor is unique since it uses 32 different modulators and carries (all based on sine waves).

While the Multi Oscillator introduces the waveform Peak. Since most of these waveforms are not really found
in the other synthesizer it is therefor considered as the hardest to learn in Reason. However by understanding
the way that for instance the Subtractor in Reason works, it makes the jump easier to handle Thor.
