That puzzled me too, but even for English slang baddest is not as used as bad-assest. I've heard or read the latter several times. Not a native english speaker myself (see my sig lol) but after watching "The Wire" twice I'm quite familiar with slang of this kind

The following is already basic, but just in case: roughly speaking bad-ass means tough (person or thing), without more context it usually means a positive thing. That also happens in several languages.

its just bout certain groups or street have slang...emerged from life and common area slang and to have own code noone on outside gets..or you can determine easy if someone is not from youre area...also its fun

Not that is very used but I'm sure of it. And not necessarily in "the wire", that was just an example. The more common thing is most bad-ass.
Since I'm sure, you can just check it in the urban dictionary for instance.

Just with that you'll find almost every neighborhood has its own couple of unique slang names.

Yes, from 'Jay' or 'J' for joint. But 'Jason' sounds way less 'bait' to say in public! lol
I don't know if I'd say I want to suck on a Jason though. But each to his/her own!
