What did I get from playing competitively? I used to play sport competitively; I enjoyed the ego bruising (i gave them), the trash talk etc
But if you mean what did I get from computer gaming in general? I grew up with physical card games and board games where you need to have people at your house to play. So you could say....pc gaming was removing a bottleneck, it was convenient.

Now in regards to old games? I had an Amiga 500 as a kid. There were some killer games on there for sure.
But I wouldn't compare those games to today's.

I played Counter-Strike (1.6) for two years semi professionally and WoW for almost a decade at or close to 'world-first' level. Accomplishing something that you know only a handful of people in the world can compete with, even though millions are trying, is addictive and exhilarating.

Nowadays, I only play short 8/16/32 bit 'Nintendo hard' games, for fun and to keep my reaction times from atrophying too much as I get older. I never play '50-150h' RPGs/open world games anymore, because I don't want to commit to the same game for several months.

With almost every game released between 1980, all the way up to the Switch 1 now being playable on PC, I won't need more choice for the remainder of my life.

    I'm indifferent to graphics.

I started playing older (Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, Prostreet...) Need for Speed games franchise and some other driving, flying, fighting, racing sims, mostly to address my slow reaction times, reflexes, thinking. They are also fun, of course, but I am not a gamer, never been one. I just play an hour or two every couple of days. I actually can't stand playing more than that as it is. I get very tired, but less and less the more I play them. So they work.

On rare occasions when I feel like gaming more, I play games like God of War, Destroy All Humans!, or strategy games like Red Alert, C&C, Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Empires, and Worms Armageddon! <-- this last one is so much fun, especially on my "wine nights". :)

Honestly, making music is like gaming for me, and I can do that for many hours, almost every day.

Oh, I almost forgot ... I've been getting into Dead Space and No Man's Sky lately ...

If you like scary games like I do then Doom 3, Dead Space 1-3, and Silent Hill franchise could fit the bill. I played all of these and enjoyed all of them quite a lot.

Dead Space is a good series. To me that one was probably heavily influenced by the original System Shock games though.. great games. It's where my avatar comes from, for the unfamiliar.

Another really good 'horror' game is a Nintendo Game Cube called Eternal Darkness. I'm not a big Nintendo guy by any stretch, but that game was ground breaking at the time, and I've never seen anything else like it since. I don't want to give anything away for people that haven't played it. It's psychological fuckery probably worked a lot better in that era though.

I’ve also played a lot of dirt rally, doing time trials on the wales maps with my playseat and racing wheel It is so much better to play racing games with a racing wheel once you've done that, you'll never want to go back to a controller.

That one is next on my list (after I finish Black Myth Wukong). I played the beta for a bit, and loved it. The original was a sleeper-hit too. I got it for something close to $10 on Epic Games when it first came out.

In recent years I've had a hard time staying in a video game but lately I've been alternating between Hitman and Death Trash.

Have to be really in the mood to play it though, and most of the time I'm not.
