I know it's not the same, but some vocoders can be coaxed into very talkbox-esque sounds, especially playing with the sibilance detection and turn down the noise.

Some real talkboxes feel like they're literally tearing out the fillings of your teeth.

 

Here's a recipe for a real cheap'n'cheerful DIY talkbox:

An unused headset, those cheap in-ear mobile handsfree earbuds work usually fine.
Some plastic tube.
An amplifier for the earbuds, most probably the headphone out on a laptop or on the motherboard of a desktop.

Stuff one earbud on one end of the tube, it should be a snug fit. Gaffa tape if needed.
Crank out some sounds to the headset, just max out the volume, place the other end of the tube in the corner of your filthy mouth.
Record making goofy faces trying to mouth the phonemes.
Profit.
