finding and listening tracks in the web, ask to your heart, why this part impressed you, can you create another one and found the true principle behind the part
make some note when you got a new idea or a theory
integrate everything to and develop a completely new workflow, and branches

I started producing EDM to mainly help me understand mixing. Before that, I was mostly doing Rock/Metal, but couldn't produce a like-able track fast enough to spend quality time mixng it.

While mixing the track below, many things clicked for me about the sonic space a song must fit in (To me, that space is very small in my mind)
It also just happened to be the first and only song I've had signed to a label haha.

I did master it myself. But it wasn't anything crazy besides some minor eq cuts, a little widening of the top end, and of course limiting to bring up the level. The way I eq'd each track....was very unorthodox and I'm hoping to start making some videos about it. You could call it cheating.
