I use my fruity plugin's in Cubase, so mine goes (inorder):

Fruity Multiband Compresser (livens up low-ends without distortion)
Fruity Parametric EQ (My favourite because it shows a live graphic repersentation of the waves)
    Fruity Limiter

i'm just a beginner in all this, so i usually just place a limiter on the master bus, one that doesn't boost the sound too much because i find it can ruin the dynamics of loud/quiet spots in the song..
i appreciate all the good info in this thread! i will have to investigate some of the suggestions people offered..

i agree with "if you mix it right you don;t need much on the master bus"

    FabFilter Pro-C (Compressor)
    FabFilter Pro-Q (EQ)
    FabFilter Pro-L (Limiter)

For individual tracks, I over-abuse Waves OneKnob Pressure and OneKnob Wetter. Heh.

Depends on your style of music. I'm more of a Pop/Rock (guitar based) guy.

Magnetic II > Compressor (subtle) > EQ (subtle) > Limiter (Everything Native Studio One based, except for Magnetic ii)

Also, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I render my mix first then master separately...Studio One gets a +1 for simplifying that process for me.

I sometimes use iZotope Ozone 4, for the dynamics processing and exciter. Sometimes aphex aural exicter + Ableton native compressor and a limiter of some kind.

I second the Waves L3, esp if you'll be printing down from 24 to 16-bit. I also like the Wavearts Final Plug for the same purpose.

Ah... "The Master Buss Fix..." I know it too well...

It usually starts to go wrong at the arrangement stage, when I pile on too many sounds.

Then, I'll try to make each of those sounds bigger and louder than all the others.

Finally, what I call mixing is... keep turning up each channel in turn until the master buss is clipping horribly.

..And then I apply a multiband limiter over the master buss to try to compensate.

The following day... when I listen back to the lifeless dirge that I have created... I remove the buss limiter and all the processing from the channels, drop all the faders, turn the monitors up quite loud and try to listen to the arrangement for channels I can live without. And try again.

I might go through this process 6 to 10 times. If I need to put anything over the master buss then perhaps I haven't arranged/mixed it properly.

I may well use additional processing on the final mix, but this should be to tweak and enhance, not to fix my poor mixing skills.

I must confess however that I rarely reach the level of perfection that I seek. Too many badgertoons feature "the master buss fix."

    tB.

In the mixing biz, they say the perfect Rock mix is "Everything louder than everything else". LOL
