    Hello friends... :shalom:
How are you guys? I wish us all always in joy and happiness

On this occasion, I would like to ask about the articulation or technique of playing strings which is used at 04:11?

    1. What is the name of the technique/string articulation at 04:11?
    2. Can I find the articulation of those strings in the VSTi or Kontakt Library?
    If so,
    3. Can you tell me what virtual instruments / soundbank please?

I've been listening to that sound for a long time, but I don't know what it's called...
That articulation really touched my heart... Especially that song...
I usually only find Legato, Spiccato, Staccato, and Tremolo articulations on virtual instruments or soundbanks...

Thanks in advance for the help and information...
Have a great day for all of us...

A well executed Legato, no more no less..

I guess you could say Glide or Glissando if you wanted to emphasize de idea of Smoothly sliding the notes.
However in strict terms, Glissando is usually done in wider intervals or full scale/arpeggio runs.

    So yeah, Legato :guru:

I think it's a legato transition from one string to another. Both strings are pressed, first string, first and second, second alone with a little crescendo, first alone.
I don't know if there's a term for this technique but you should be able to recreate this with a polyphonic sound.

    I see...

I'm intrigued by the "glide" sound in each of those transitions...
And I haven't found a way to do anything like that on virtual instruments or kontakt libraries... Because I can't make a "glide" / swinging legato like that on a regular legato patch... Any ideas?

    Interesting...

How to make that with a polyphonic sound?

yup definitely a bowed legato but there is definitely a bit of post processing i once got a sound like that from running a electric violin trough some guitar pedals

Using a fade in/out in the two respective notes? Just off the top of my head

What Avenger meant is probably: use a Polyphonic Legato patch/preset/sound/instrument..

Older more Synth-like instruments might do it automatically with fades,
but realist Libraries must have the Polyphonic Legato option, and some times they can even include Divisi..

That would be the best scenario,
otherwise you will have to overlay the different voices separately.

I want to add another example
This is one of my favorite songs...
The legato "glide" / "slide" string I mean is at 05:44

I dunno, that sounds like a legato "slide"...
Just like the Phil Collins song

Do you have a sample of it?

I'm a bit confused how to do a fade-in/fade-out on a midi note when drawing a midi on a virtual instrument?
    Thanks in advance

I've seen the video... It seems a bit different from what I meant...
But the demo of the instrument was very interesting... Maybe next time I'll dig into it...
    Thank you

I can't seem to find it on EWQL Symphony Orchestra Platinum Kontakt version...

    I see...
I'm still trying to dig up information about this...
    Thank you

IMHO, since there're two notes at once for a very short time, you just shouldn't use a monophonic instrument.

I don't know about EWQLSO Strings..
but some of the best strings for Polyphonic/Divisi stuff must be Audiobro MSS.

LASS could do it too, but it would be way more difficult to set up,
whereas MSS is very fool proof.

I don't recall atm, but there's surely more libraries that have Polyphonic Legato..
maybe: N.I. SS, Cinestrings, Berlin Strings, SF SSS, Cinematic, BBCSO, Afflatus, Venice Strings.. EWQL-HO?

Each one may have a different approach/capabilities so ymmv..

Oh, oh, this one is going to be difficult. Some of the strings are playing a heavy tremolo and the slides of the different sections are different.

I'm sure there's a more accurate word or expression (cross-fade?)
You have a start note/string. And an end note/string. You simulate the legato playing the first from loud to quiet and the second the opposite.

Spitfire's Bernard Herrmann Composer Toolkit has a really good portamento legato violin patch that would probably emulate both of those songs. It's a good library, just a bit pricey...

The technique is called Legato, what you're hearing is called Portamento, a smooth transition from one note to another.

Got it... Thank you Master...
At your suggestion, I did some research on polyphonic sound, and I'm so grateful to have figured it out...

Skip to 02:24... is it right?

    Amazing observation... :woot:

    =======

Thank you for telling me

I'll find out more, thanks for pointing out some sample libraries

    =======

Looks like after watching a video tutorial about polyphonic sound, I'm starting to understand what you mean...
I'll try it when I'm free... Thank you

    =======

Wow... Very interesting... And thanks for telling me about portamento legato... I just found out...
I've also seen the demo video... And it sounds crazy cool... :woot:

I see it's US$499.00... Maybe I'll save up and wait for the sale... Lol :rofl:

    =======

@c.r. moon also said things about portamento to me... And you have given me more explanation... And this is what I really want to know... About portamento... I just found out the name... Thank you

Is there a legato technique, short technique, and transition technique or something other than portamento? I'm interested in learning it or at least knowing how it sounds... Is there a keyword I can use on Youtube to search all techniques like Portamento... ?
Because I can't search if I don't know the name right?

Too bad I didn't find it on the sister site...
Maybe I'll head to youtube to dig up information about the EWHO Diamond or OPUS edition... Thanks for letting me know...

I confirm that it is a portamento between a major second interval, very common technique. You can find this in all the major string sample libraries on the market...

    Cheers, V

Looks a bit complicated but works.

Portamento just means to slide from one note to another (higher or lower on the same string). Most prominent example would probably be a guitar played with a bottle neck.

I'm not sponsored by Audiobro MSS.. (in fact I still much prefer the tone/sound of LASS; and the only other String lib that interests me is EWQLHO)
but their system is really the most complete/featured, controllable and trouble-free when it comes to Legato..
