As someone from very close to Liverpool and plays a 9 minute Beatles medley and the odd other track in my bands live set, I could probably fill a page with my thoughts on them. @Lenny Belardo II said on Page 1 about the complexity, and I think it is the multiple layers of harmony within each song, not just vocals, but the chords, the bass, there is just so much happening, even on the early “pop” stuff.

I always kind of figured it was that when they wrote, whilst it may have been guitar based, their choice of chords and the various augmentations, it was almost like they wrote chords on piano and then played on guitar. When you actually look at the chord charts for example, they just aren’t the regular basics. I mean, I’m no Satch, Vai or Holdsworth, but I would generally say I am a decent enough player, and when you learn chords for a Beatles song as a guitarist and you try to play them properly, there is many a time you look at it and think “how the FUCK did they come up with that chord????” or modulation, a time signature, it’s all just so very advanced, but so simple.

I think one of the tracks that really highlights what I was saying about the various harmonies it for me is Ob La Di, Ob La Da. Such a simple song, but when it comes to the chorus, the way the bass moves against the guitar, it’s like there is suddenly a new chord that appears when the two instruments (and vocals) play together (about 29 seconds, before the “Life goes on…” line. It’s so simple but it’s amazing.

Someone once said to me, "I like the Beatles, but only the 60s stuff, not so much the 70s stuff". I just thought, "what an idiot". Obviously they were referring to the earlier pop stuff and they did change a lot over the short time they were together, but still, what an idiot lol

I'm amazed at how stupid some people are. Their 80s stuff was way better than their 70s stuff

The Beatles was a British beat, rock and pop band in the 1960s. With more than 600 million records sold - according to estimates by its record company EMI even more than a billion - it is the most successful band in music history. The band reached the peak of their career between 1964 and 1969, when they topped the charts in almost every country. In 1970 the band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr parted ways due to internal tensions. The musicians then successfully pursued their own music projects.

  12. I am sure it is only a matter of time before Korean Boy Band BTS (a creation of the Hybe Corporation) will surpass this record. The names John, Paul, George and Ringo will pale in comparison to the household names Kim Seok-jin, Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Jung Hoseok, Min Yoongi, Kim Taehyung, Park Jimin and Jeon Jeongguk.
Do not attempt to pronounce these names without a speech pathologist nearby. Emergency wards are full of people with torn tongue ligaments.

The same thread this is taken from on roadiemusic.com clearly says that The Internet figures have now been added which invalidates anything from the last century. It even says Adele as one of five due to the amount of streaming is more popular. It indicates while it should not be considered in the same figures and in its own category because the technology has changed, it is counted.
You are right - times change, technology changes and many other things do too.

P.S - Miles Davis' "A Kind of Blue' was the top-selling most popular jazz LP of al ltime with 50 years in the top 100 jazz LP's. That is also changing. I never understood how something that can be popular for 50 years can be ousted by something that has not even survived a decade. Que sera sera.

I haven't read the whole thread but couldn't resist adding to it so apologies if others have already said what I've written.

Something that The Beatles did that's much less common today is that they would come to the studio (or wherever) with musical ideas and then "jam". They'd play things over and over as a band, changing bits, adding bits, etc. And one member would add things that the others might never have thought of. And they would re-work old material, integrating it, changing it, etc.

As an example, I was lucky enough to work with a drummer for a few years, and he approached music in a completely different way to me. I think it's this idea that if you have a group of people in a room, then it's easier to come up with something that no one individual would have thought of.

A lot of music today is made by individuals so it can be a bit one-dimensional.

As another example, a lot of guitarists think they're bass players, but when asked to add a bassline to a song, they'll add what is really a "low guitar part", not a true bass line (one of my pet hates!). Bass players think differently - they'll play off the drummer more, especially the kick.

    Anyway, that's my 2c.

    Cheers!

I always marvel at Paul McCarthy's lovely lines. They are a pearls unto themselves and a thing of beauty, both before he died and too with the new guy.whoever he is. :disco:

I don't know if this Conspiranoic video was linked here by someone, or how did it get on my tabs,
and I don't know who's this Ole Dammegard talking, but I found some of it interesting..

    First he talks about Lennon,
and then about Paul/Faul which is more interesting..

And then the final part is about the whole Flower Power and Rock revolution,
which I found much more interesting..

This is more or less what he says:
""There's a lot of evidence showing that the whole Rock movement,
was coordinated by military intelligence in the background, pumping drugs and LSD in the back,
where one of the centers was Laurel Canyon, just outside L.A, where loads of ppl who couldn't even play,
was drawn to this tiny little village, or along this winding mountain road with just a few houses,
all of them were drawn around this Zappa house..

Many like Crosby Stills & Nash, the Monkees, John Lee Mitchell, the Doors, many of them were drawn in..
and they couldn't play or anything, like the Doors were hardly musicians,

They came pulled in-there by an invisible magnet, all at the same time, not knowing anything,
and then in a few months suddenly they were equipped with Guitars and Amplifiers, (Expensive no??)
and had Record deals with CBS and other major labels, that were part of the establishment they supposedly were against..

And then in the middle of Laurel Canyon, there was a Massive CIA secret army base,
whit a massive film and recording studios.. they produced more films than the whole of Hollywood,
in this studios at the Lookout Moutain that's what they were called..
And many of this artist's parents had some kind of connection with military intelligence..""
(and then he gets more into Charles manson type stuff..)

-Certainly not the first time I hear about this but,
It's interesting that he mentions Noob musicians suddenly getting Expensive Guitars/Amps and record deals..

It's clear the CIA had ties with the whole LSD movement (Timothy Leary)..
And experimented with it, like that entire French village that they poisoned??
Then all the MK-Ultra, Unabomber type stuff, yeah the shit goes deep.. lol

In any case found interesting that all of this reportedly happened next to Zappa's home which happened to be there,
and it's true that Zappa's Father was some sort of Chemist for the Military or something..

Although in Zappa's favor, he made clear many times during his career he was pretty anti drugs, and anti hippy movement..
(he later became a political kinda-liberalist/conservatist figure/commentator, against all odds..)

But yeah, In a way I always found intriguing that Zappa got so Big and Successful almost out of nowhere,
being his music as Odd as it was, and certainly advanced to their time..

I mean while all other musicians were playing four chord songs,
he was already doing all that Mental zappa stuff.. but he really wasn't that good of a player himself!

So where the heck did he came from?
I saw that super old video of young-him playing a bicycle as a percussive instrument on TV,
and nothing would make you suspect he had the talent and knowledge to get to that level so fast..

Although ofc, from our limited point of view is hard to imagine/know how it all went..

Ofc I'm not saying Zappa was not talented/knowledgeable enough,
or that he got implanted by the establishment or a CIA Psy-Op..

He's actually an example of somebody who took the reins of his musical business from the beggining,
and managed the whole stuff himself: Composing, Hiring/Rehearsing, Gear/Studio, Booking, Recording/Producing, Editing/Publishing..

He did all of it on his own, and that's Awesome/loable, specially at the time,
and that's also another type of anomaly in itself..

I did actually read Zappa's biography 10 years ago, a massive Brick of a book telling yo,
but I can barely remember any of the details, or any of it for that matter.. lol

I know he began with radio spots and vocal overdubs, stuff like that..
But I don't know, in retrospective is a bit odd that all of this CIA stuff happened around Zappas house,
and that he got so big so fast, in spite of the strange musical approach/style,
and probably music over saturation that occurred at the time.

And well he also he kinda did help in some strange experiment,
like Cptn Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica disc, which was recorded in that secluded Mad house.. lol

Btw I did also read Geoff Emerick's book about the Beatles, a couple of times in fact..
but since I'm not that much of a die-heart fan of either Zappa nor Beatles,
I hardly remember the details, just some the rough Technological stuff that was commented in it..
(also they were toilet reading material, so it's assimilated differently.. lol)

Oh, a generation of young musicians, all talented in different ways, congregating around an area in a city that's been the epicenter of entertainment forever?

And record companies throwing money at these young talents who seem to create a new kind of music that has enormous market value?

Why, only a deep government conspiracy could explain that.
