    Hey guys,

Just wanting to know what lubricants you use on your guitar strings to keep them in a like-new state longer and keeps the strings slippery?

I used to use a cloth that came in a silver bag that was soaked in a type of oil.

Can't seem to get them anymore locally. But I've used these for over 20 years. Just thought there might be something newer and better out there that I do not know about.

Hit me up with your suggestions :D

    Finger grease.

Never used any sold product though, I doubt it would make my playing any better...

Mineral oil works good (that's main component in fastfret) and is cheap. Keeps the strings from rusting along with clean hands, rag rub after playing/before mineral oil.

I use the Fender Speed Slick stick as its cheap and so easy and quick to apply before and after playing each time.

This is actually something needed, despite First World problem comments. Not only does in keep your strings slippery, but it also conditions the strings to prevent rust, prolong life, and so on, meaning it is a small investment for long term gains as you will save money on strings over the long term as they will last longer.

I've just used an ordinary terry facecloth to wipe my strings and neck after playing, don't need anything else, been doing this for over 60 years, just keep them clean and dry nothing else needed

I guess now I know both pros and amateurs that use string lube. Thing is, what you all are putting on your strings and skin is a hydrocarbon which is toxic, and with all the other crap in our daily environment (like burning paraffin candles) adds up over time. People also use mineral oil to condition rosewood fingerboards which is also off putting to me with names like lemon oil and other innocuous monikers. A great alternative to using petroleum products on fretboards or maybe even your strings and what I have been using for 40 years is organic linseed oil. It works great. Once a year a put a bit on, let it absorb for a half hour and wipe off the residue with a rag. Why use an unhealthy alternative to a natural solution if you don't need to.

Most products are mineral oil based.
About using organic oil, it is more a matter of durability.

To get the same effect than mineral oil, you should apply twice or much organic oil.

Yes, applying mineral oil may sound like a sacrilege ... but when you paint or varnish it is the same problem :winker:
