if you use a compressor just like a compressor then use a stock compressor, it's more then enough.

On some or maybe all of those 20 tracks, you can just use a single instance of your compressor on a return track and dial in the amount of compression you want through your sends.

For certain tracks this works. I sometimes do this with sounds that are further back in the mix. However, you can't dial in the amount of compression at all. you can only dial in how much signal from the channel strip you can send to the compressor. But you are still stuck with all the same compressor parameters such as Attack, Release, Threshold, Compression Ratio, and so on. This is a big difference.

    In one word: sound.

Short attack times to catch transients and peaks, longer to let them through and make a sound more snappy.
Short release times to bring it back quickly, longer to hold the decay/release phase down.
Low ratio, low threshold. High ratio, high threshold.

On busses to bring L/R, M/S level more together, or the stereo dynamics.

For taming transients with character maybe a clipper is better, but 1176 emus do this pretty good aswell.
