Hardware? Dang, I don't even know what's out there any more.

I'd like a rebuilt, perfect condition vintage Binson Echorec.

Delay is something that plugins do so well... it's probably the single piece of outboard gear I'd never worry about having. Certainly a digital one. That's why given the theoretical question I'd go analog...
I did have an SDE3000 once and they are sweeeeet

My favorite delay unit was a Sony 3-head stereo reel-to-reel I had 40 years ago.
It gave those Revox-like hall of mirror echoes when you plugged the inputs and outputs into each other.
Especially good for turning a simple 8 or 16 note sequence into a doorway to infinity.

If you got about $3500 there's a Baby Bin in BEAUTIFUL condition out here for sale..

I'll stick with my SDE-1000 and my SE-50/SE-70, and my Space Echo..
    (I'd kill somebody for a PCM41 or 42 though)

Maybe not as popular or desirable, but I've always enjoyed the bridge between tape and digital.
Those 70's/80's "black box" analog rack units like the Multivox MD-5, (wish I hadn't sold mine!),
and the various Yamaha and Ibanez racks......gritty noise, self oscillation til the mothership lands,
and less hassle maintenance wise. That being said having owned a Roland RE-201 and borrowed a
friend's Binson to use in some sessions....there's nothing quite like 'em. And yeah, Lexie PCM's are
on the top of my G.A.S. list!
