what is the difference between these note values

    Well no difference, but the first writing with the "duplets" is unusual, I'd say unuseful and redundant because we are in 4/4, so the subdivision is ALREADY 2 notes per beat [i.e. 1/8]

    If we were in 6/8 or any other time signatures with a "triplet subdivision" you'd have to mark with the "duplet" sign a group of 2 notes for a beat

    But if you are in 4/4 you dont need, so I can say that you won't find that thing in a professional score
