  5. Hmmm....nah. I am not 20 but can hear what it is like to hear as a 20 year old? Not logical, makes no sense to me. Someone please explain otherwise.

ACUTE (SUDDEN) HEARING LOSS: MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. READ IF YOU CARE!

One Sunday morning I woke up and noticed that I don’t hear a thing on my right ear. I wasn’t on any concert or exposed to any loud source (not even dealing with music the night before). It was strange but I was not scared because it was similar to the loss that occurs sometimes when changing altitude for instance. But the hearing didn’t return that day. So Monday morning I called the specialist (of otorhinolaryngology), because I know him. Otherwise here you must first visit your “family” doc an he/she sends you to the appropriate spec. Usually you have to wait for specialist to exam you but they had time the next day which seemed perfect.

Here comes the “BE CAREFULL” part – I went to my “family” doc only for the paper but she controlled my ears, gave me a nasal spray and did not have any intention to write the paper that I needed (said that my hearing will return). Well I said that I already made the appointment with the otolaryngologist. So finally she gave me the paper saying something like: “..and what do you think that he will tell you that I did not already…”

The specialist made some hearing (and other) tests, become pale and I was hospitalized(!) in a few hours. Imagine my surprise – I only had time to go home to pick some stuff to wear (don’t like that “butt sticking out” outfit :)) and I was physically 100% OK. They don’t know what is the cause (I still didn’t hear a thing on my right ear) so they bomb you IV with anti-bacteria stuff, blood “diluents”, corticosteroids,… and start making MRI, CT scans.. and a lot of other stuff.

    CONCLUSION:

My hearing was at 0 dB on my left ear (almost perfect) and at -85dB on my right! Now the hearing returned but I still have a “narrow filter” on a certain frequency so – no more “golden ears”. Music is fortunately my hobby (although I studied piano for 12 years) and I can still do some mixing, but sometimes it is depressing (probably there are folks that wouldn’t even care…) Can’t imagine if I were a pro!

BE CAREFULL – EVERY MINUTE COUNTS

The specialist said that these cases can be completely reversed IF YOU ACT IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS. 36 is really pushing it.. and in my case “it was a little miracle” as he put it.

You will lose your hearing; there is nothing that you can do. You are losing it right now.. but IF YOU EXPERIENCE ACUTE LOSS, ACT FAST! (Don’t wait a day or two as I did.. though some people wouldn’t bother for a week or more, as the docs said). Maybe it’s nothing but it can be trouble.

Well, on the other hand – Beethoven never heard his 9th symphony.. although, he conducted the peace. I read somewhere, it was a pain to watch.. ;P

I wish a long and happy life to your ears! :)

At 70 yo, stop violin and classic music and start extended range guitar or bass in a deathcore band.:headbang::hahaha:

I have some significant hearing loss in my right ear. I never think about/notice it until I'm mixing and I catch myself panning everything to the right. heh

Now we know, why older people give a shit about sound quality. Simple radio receiver from Walmart sounds on par with 100.000 high fidelity, ultra high resoulution analog sound system:rofl:

No really, arguing about differences in sound quality between 99$ and 110$ usb interface at age 60 is a bit silly:rofl:

i had several months one ear just blocked, it sounded similar to what we have here at the age of 60 or 70. (because of stress)
now all is back to normal and i am glad, as it was driving my insane.
and i felt thankful that it returned to normal, after 4 weeks i got worried a lot, but the doc wasnt finding anything, the one ear is free ...

They did not found out anything - as was the case of ArticStorm - the inner hearing apparatus is too complicated. They give you intravenously everything they have (unfortunately no fun drugs :D) and then try to find out what’s wrong. If it is an infection, an antibacterial med will do… and so on..

Remember that one: the difference between God and a doctor - God doesn't think he's a doctor.

I rather ask a nice girl to help me out with that.. so technically… I’m not a sinner

I do still attend concerts but I am afraid of this. Also, the classes at my gym are accompanied by way too loud musac. Does anyone could advise some plugin that does reduce the decibel amount without compromising the sound quality?

    Thanks in advance

Wow. Very interesting and also rather scary thread. Thanks for that advice Matt777. The birthday mastering sweet mindpassfilter? That cracks me up! Gnib, have you looked into some kind of ear protection like earplugs for instants yet?
