At first, I thought he was printing out, for the architect (too large a format for musical notation, so multitasking), one of those CAD drawings, like the way they used to do it in the olden days.

Of course the thing about small towns is that many, maybe most, if not all, have been largely gutted/abandoned-- a mass exodus out of and into and in favor of cities (or at least having to drive ridiculous distances to work in them) and the relatively-menial and/or meaningless jobs that support the current incarnation of civilization, what with its 'one-trick pony' specialists and hyperspecializations.
So there is no real, classic community left in the smaller towns (if anywhere else). They've become inviable in that regard and on some levels. That may change and could already be doing so in some places and regards, such as through movements like Transition Towns and permaculture and people in general who've had about enough of the current system.
Opportunity knocks.
