I notice that we tend to focus too much on "what/which" and forget about the "where". You can have the same sequence of notes make up very different melodies and implied harmony just by changing note duration and where those notes fall on the beat.

At first, a beginner should learn what tonic, pre-dominant and dominant chords are before using this one as referance.

This chart is all about counterpoint.

 

I don't see a connection to counterpoint, do you mind to elaborate that? Counterpoint is a technic to create a melody "on top of" another melody following specific rules.
This chart is more about creating a cadence, i.e. the sequence of the different steps and their associated chords within a specific scale.

I am writing this post just to explain more.

Suppose each of these lines represents a string of notes or chords. We start moving from a point. There are thousands of ways. Each of these ends somewhere.

My question was, which path should we choose?
Although Olymoon gave a very good explanation in his post.

When we don't know where the destination is. Because when we try to step into these nested lines, it is not clear what we are doing. At any moment of time, we can change the route and go to another destination. It's unknown where each of these paths lead to and even the destination is unclear to us.

 

Sometimes is just about Pulling the/one String,
just keep Pulling, keep.. and see where it goes..

Then if there's a weak spot anywhere you fix it,
normalize it under your own parameters for that idea

Any undergraduate student of post-modernist art can tell you that the image is upside down.

Also, it doesn't matter which path you trace, there is meaning in every line and every space if your mind is creative enough to perceive it.

You seem to be looking for a path that is the correct path based on some imagined plot (or rule) but they're all correct.

 

Wow! This is an example of the saying that "one can ask a question so dumb that 100 wiseman won't be able to give an answer".

I guess what you're looking for depends of what your goals are. If it's music, then you just play until it feels and sound right. Shure there are guidelines since music theory is mathematical, it can help you to work faster if you master it, but there are no "how to" except do and see what comes out of it. If its biology, like literally "how to chose what note to play" in a way of chemical reactions in your brain that push you to one or another direction then its not a right place for such questions. If its like general, philosophycal question then same applies, ask somwhere else. Well, and so on, you probably get it. Be more specific if you want a precise answer.

 

But without knowing where we are and where we want to go, the only thing that happens is that we become like someone who is lost in a big forest.

When someone is lost, the only thing he can think of is how to find the way and get out of that uncertain space.

Humans can reach or make meanings when they determine the paths for themselves. Without a clear path and a clear goal, there will be no meaning. Unless we forget the meanings and live in a world of meaninglessness.

Universities only offer music 'theory' degrees. No music 'fact' degrees to be had. Music is an open ended puzzle without universal solutions, goals or paths. It's meaningful all the same. Just in different ways to different people at different times.

I sometimes think Foster poses these questions in such a way that when no satisfactory answer is given he feels some kind of superiority for having framed the wholly incorrect question in the first place.

 

When in doubt always go with "asshole". It fits anywhere.

 

I feel that, the mere response to this thread means you read a question which loops back into itself without an answer. Soon as you hit "Post Reply" is when Foster had his way with you and he knows it. That's when you become the E string on his contrabass booming in the back, supporting the rhythm as it follows suit.

 

Imagine you have a C chord (CEG) and move to Dm (DFA). Now imagine three voices making individual "melodies", one moving C->D, another moving E->F, and another moving G->A.

 

Of course I have played right into his argument by partaking. Like the question "prove that there is no God".... it's the kind of bait that always lures the idiot fish like myself. But like the individual asking one to prove the unprovable, it does not confer any merit to frame a question in a way that can never satisfy. If indeed Foster is sitting back feeling smug that nobody has provided a satisfactory explanation, he is indeed a sorry case and as I've long suspected has no clear idea of why he became involved in music at all.
